We, as in AfterDawn.com, are looking to expand our team of site's content writers within next couple of weeks and we want you to tell us why you should be the one picked to fill the role.
We ran a search for new staff writers back in September, 2005 and found several good candidates, but due variety of reasons, we failed to find a suitable candidate for our aD staff writer position. However, we did find two people for our soon-to-be-relaunched gaming site, so as far as gaming section goes, we're now covered.
But, the position of staff writer for AfterDawn.com remains open. This is what we're looking for:- must be able to write good/excellent English (this does include people whose primary language isn't English, after all, we are a Finnish site..)
- good knowledge about digital video, movie backups, P2P, etc (read through our news section and you'll get an idea what type of areas we normally cover)
- ability to write articles and guides in a way that they are easy to understand, even for a person who doesn't have the in-depth knowledge of the subject covered
- willing to commit at least 15 hours each week to write content
- able to work as part of a team, with weird working hours
- good writing skills -- the fact that you know your grammar, doesn't necessarily make you a good writer :-)
- able to work remotely, using ICQ and email as the means to communicate with other members of the team
The person who gets selected will write news articles, guides, glossary entries, FAQ items, etc to our main site, AfterDawn.com. He/She will work together with our team of admins (Dela, Ketola, myself, etc) using ICQ and email. This is a paid position.
That's it, really. Send in your application using this form:
http://www.afterdawn.com/general/apply_for_position.cfm
Deadline for applications is 30th of December, 23:59 UTC.

Lol, pretty much all of the Admin team speak finnish as a primary language, so that shouldn't be a problem :)

sorry, for replying late, just stumbled on this one..
Quote: if any area of the forums are being "neglected", i think the members/seniors/and addicts are just as much to blame (not that anyone is being blamed). It is everyone's resposibility to the site to use the "report offensive post" feature so we can get to it and deal with it in a timely manner.
- spot on comment by the young darth. Before i was mod i used to hit that button like every 5mins. i had no idea what the mods saw when reports were made/whether it made life easier or harder, but i don't see things wrong and just ignore them. now i see the reports and they're an excellent help. However we need much more stuff reporting, this means ppl need to help us help them more by hitting that button as much as they can. Us mods do spend a lot of time actively searching/weeding out the idiots/misdemeanours/genuine mistakes etc but because a lot of members just 'turn the other cheek' there's only so much stuff we can sort out.
Quote: I Wasn't slagging you mods off or anything, i was thinking about the psp forum in perticular but creaky went in yesterday and edited everything.
- gonna repeat some of what i've said above i guess. Lately i myself have been venturing into some of the console forums and while a big part of the problem is the age group of a large chunk of the posters, a huge problem in the threads is that some members ignore lots of email posting/abusive language/behaviour instead of reporting it or just mention it to the person who's done those things. In those kind of forums it only takes one poster to post their email addy or start abusing someone and the whole thread degenerates. Like the other mods i swathe thru threads/posters like a grim reaper but there's so much crap in there that's not reported to us, that it feels like an impossible task. Every time i visit the forums, whether as a mod or as a contributor, and back when i was a member or addict, every single time i saw something wrong i reported it, we just need more ppl to do the same.

I suppose I could cope with the English part but I think that in all fairness I ought to have a more indepth knowledge base in some areas which I'm rapidly gaining by perusing the various forums. I will take on the challenge sooner than later. I'm sure that whoever is chosen will without a doubt be a suitable candidate and will perform with the distinction and professionalism which this Admin has.

God Dang it! If would figger that this has been filled by the time I get to see it.
Hey, I used to work for MP3.com... Give me a hollar, if your guy does nto work out. I wrote a good portion of the FAQ that they had up on site: What MP3s were, how you made them, what client software was the best, and how to get around various problems.
I usually work per article... If anyone is interested, just PM me.
I'm, not 15 years old though, so maybe I do not qualify?

Lethal... I know, but the <img src=" http://i.afterdawn.com/v3/f_edit.gif"> button ain't showing.
(is that html code gonna work, hm...)
the button ain't showing... Test Test
Usually I get a preview too, but I am not... Ah, it must be the Quick Reply button or something. Ahaha!
EDIT: I see... I was posting a reply through the ARTICLE. I am in the Phorum now... and now I got de button.
Ah I do not know... I am only good at figuring out how to use DvD Decrypter and DVD Shrink these days. Bfahaha!
I was on cutting edge when we were figuring out the ins and outs of MP3 files... But now everyone and their mamma knows how to use WinLAME to make good MP3s.
What is Afterdawn.com all about anyway? I usually come here to talk about DVD Decrypter/Shrink or other programs for enforcing our Digital Home Recording Act Rights.
I am pretty familiar with software, and a I know how to make a good maching from spare parts- But I am not too clear on these new 64 bit processors and OS's.
Cos, my Atlhon 2400+ XP is still running just fine, I have no reason to upgrade to any Hyperthreaded Bullpoopoo yet. Plus, nobody even KNEW that when they were buying thier 3 GHz system from Wall-Mart, they were getting ripped, cos XP Home Ed don't handle the memory the way Pro does. Also, they bought a 3 GHz HP or Gateway, but the actual speed was about 1.8 Gig, cos they did not have Dual Channel configged correctly.
I take it this place deals with hardware and Software and the best combos thereof? All I know is that this was the last bastion of Freedom, the only place where we could obtain a copy of DVD Decrypter, until Macro-Pissin "enforced their Intellectual Property Rights" and forced AD.com to stop allowing DL's of DVD Decrypter.
Honestly, I do not see HOW they can claim ownership, as LuK literally GAVE source code to the Public. So, they can NOT claim IP on DVD Decrypter.
Anyway, L-UK is still making stuff, and I am sure there is a lot of "private" under the table sophtware, that Macro-Vishna has no IP claim on and never will.
Ah, glack, don't get me started on this shi-ite, it is my pet peeve. Nobody tells me that I cannot enforce my G-d and State-Given right to protect the stuff I BUY. M-Vision can K my A.
Ah Well:

Ah, I found my way here by looking up my post history under my account info.
:) :p :/
Ahahaha!
Quote: By the way, application for the post ceased at the end of 2005 ;-)
Yah. I have not been in here since November or something. I came in here, to post my rants about DVD-D being pulled off the serverz here.
Too bad, cos it's what I am best at doing, I used to beta test software, compare it to other software, then write about it.
See, the shite of it is, that the companies who make the stuff will pay you a lot to be a shill and write all kinds of favourable reviews about software that stinks, in this case, the Windows Media Format (ASF/WMx)-
Remember this?
"Windows Media Files sound better than MP3's and are half the size!"
Meaning, a 64 Kbps ASF file is of course half the size of a 128 Kbps MP3 file. Well of course it is! And is sounds like poo too!
Considering that 128 Kbps is NOT industry standard for MP3s... 192 Kbps is web-site standard now... But 320 Kbps is the actual standard for people who work on music- In the business, I mean, movies are made and some of the soundtrack has been transferred on I-Pods like that.
So, my newest peeve is WMA and all that DRM crapola. I have found about five different ways to make certain content play.
But the whole point is: WHY bother breaking DRM on content that is by default inferior? There is no reason to do this, yet people spend hours and days breaking into DRM.
See, that is what I fear about the future of Software: Everything will be DRMmmed to deth. I have a friend that bought Pinnacle. I re-installed it into his machine for him. The program did not work until it connected to a website and activated. What bunk!
My goal in life is to see DRM done away with, and to see the day when people buy a product, they GET the product. I have no problems buying software, DVDs or Audio CDs- I'll even pay a high price for stuff I need. But I will NOT pay a high price for anything that has some kind of crappy LOCK on it and I cannot USE it until I have proved that I bought it 7 different times at 7 different DRM sites.
I think the fact that I had forked over a few pieces of paper with Ben Franklin's Face on it proves I bought it, do you not agree?
Nuff Sed... Sorry about the Tome, Haha!
