Sony cuts $20 from PlayStation 2

21 April 2006 1:20 by Matti "Siggy" Vähäkainu | 74 comments

Sony cuts $20 from PlayStation 2 Despite the requirement made by Ken Kutagari at the PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo in March, that his beloved console, PlayStation 2, should not have any forthcoming price drops, Sony has announced to cut the price of PlayStation 2 by $20 making it $129. This price cut is only for the US and the company denies any plans to redo it in Europe.

After the Business Briefing in Tokyo, analysts predicted a price drops from $149 to $129 shortly. This time they were pinpoint accurate. After less than a month Sony announced the exact cut in PS2 price. "Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer at a new value price," said the president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Kaz Hirai.

This might give a small boost for the console, although the PS2's success doesn't really even need a boost, as reported by GameSpot, "By Sony's estimates, the PS2 is currently the top console in the US, holding a 55.6 percent market share."

    @ hotice

LOL.......yeah most people can figure that one out. But at this, the PS2, is still the best selling home video gaming console on the market. I see you constantly say things like the ps2 is old, it will be obelete and yeah it will, ONE DAY. Also, when the time comes that the ps2 is lost to people losing interest, the sony ps3 will be the system picking up the slack so what is the big deal?????

How much would you sell a PS2 console with an integrated chip? The PS2 isn't the slim one an earlier model, what would be a reasonable price of sale on ebay? Hypothetically speaking here?

The PS2 is pretty crappy, after a while, I have to say. 99.99$ would be a reasonable price for it.
sammorris (AfterDawn Addict) 18 June 2006 11:54 Send private message to this user
How is it crappy? It's not as fast as recent stuff, but it was never crap. I got bundles of fun out of mine, and I didn't even buy that many games for it. I'd sooner play it than an Xbox 360 in all honesty.

My quote stating "its pretty crappy" was used in the context that after a while, when you've played and finished all the games that interested you, and games stop being released on the PS2, it gets boring.

That's all, I am not one to replay classics, once I am done with them, they sit there and gather dust.

Lol. No you're right, I don't play mine that much any more, and of late DVDs have been run on my PC, despite the slightly smaller screen (156 sqin versus 226 on the TV) I can interface 5.1 on the PC rather than just 2.2 on the PS2 (although these are arguably 7.1 and 4.2 because due to the cable routing setup I use, the TV speakers can play the PC and PS2 signals. The PS2 audio cable I use has both a 2Phono lead going to the hifi and a scart cable that also carries audio so the TV speakers make noise too. Since the PC is connected to the front speakers and the hifi via splitters, the PC's signal goes along the splitters and into the TV! (I couldn't work out where the noise was coming from when both the hifi and the 2.1 were off!)

    Who doesn't have a ps2,xbox,or gcn already?
If you don't I would just wait for ps3 at this point and if you don't have the cash why not opt for a wii?

The wii will be under $250

I liked the ps2 and got plenty of joy out of it.I know the price on ps3 isn't for everyone but for me I know I will get alot of use out of it.My pc was $1800 after tax, a new gfx card, and psu and I don't regret it because I get alot of use out of it :)

Yep. That's what most of us will be doing. Wii first, then PS3 when it becomes reasonable. Alright £425 is reasonable given the production cost, but it's still expensive!

really ps3 will come with $3000 worth of hardware. That sounds crazy but it's true.Sony will be taking a loss on each system they sell.I can provide a link if yall want.
sammorris (AfterDawn Addict) 19 June 2006 1:27 Send private message to this user
No, it isn't $3000 worth, it just appears like it in terms of what PCs currently offer. You would never be able to extract as much out of the cell and RSX as you could out of four dual core P4s and two 6800s in SLi.

That's true but in fairness pc games require much more power to run the same games on consoles with less power for instance doom3 would never run on a p2 700mhz cpu on a pc but yet it did it on an xbox with those same specs and only a 64mb gfx card on xbox.

another example is emulators. We still can't emulate anything current gen on a pc without having at least twice the specs much less next gen

by the way don't forget the bluray which will be $1200 retail alone at least.

Well, hmmm, it costs £350 or so to make tmk, so yeah that's a costly addition. PC retail drives won't quite be as much as $1200, but they will be hefty. Yeah I appreciate windows makes PC games need far better hardware (although PC game designers are going out of control making some games unplayable at certain options on any system - £200 or £4000)

    What's tmk?

heres some blu-ray prices. No better source than the blu-ray website.$1200 about average you could get one for a $1000

    http://www.blu-ray.com/players/

Yeah I aggree the pc game developers are getting outta hand with the system requirements but the minimum system requirments never are enough too and that's just annoying.

Yeah they're proper TV ones though, and DVD recorders for the TV are currently how much? A good £150 for a good one, at least. Whereas a good DVDRW drive for the PC can be had for £25 now.

To be honest with you I don't even understand Uk prices. What's crazy is that little L lookin thing you'll put after the number isn't even on my keyboard lol.what's $1200 u.s. in pounds? Like 1500

anyways though. The pc drives are crazy priced to like $1200 and the recorder's will be outrageous. That link shows the pc drives and recorders on a different section but gives no price!

I know the pioneer pc drive is $1200 though... kinda sucks but hey they will come down like all technology.

The actual exchange rate at present is about £540 to the $1000, but with imports and VAT added, it works out at more like £670 to the $1000 for computer stuff. What's this L thing you're talking about?
