Rumors about the demise of Xbox appear to have been premature.
Microsoft this week revealed the first cautious details about its next-generation Xbox gaming console, which currently carries the codename Project Helix.
One major change is coming - and it may fundamentally reshape the dynamics of the gaming console market: the next Xbox will be capable of running PC games as they are.
Naturally, the console will also run Xbox's own games, but the boundary between these two worlds will become far blurrier than before. Even until now, Xbox has been extremely close to PC gaming computers in terms of its underlying technology and programming interfaces.
The information about PC game compatibility with the upcoming Xbox was confirmed by Microsoft's new Xbox chief Asha Sharma in a tweet yesterday (the link leads to Twitter/X).
The boundary between Xbox and PC has been shifting in other ways as well. Microsoft has licensed the Xbox brand to various PC-based handheld gaming devices, and the Xbox brand is also highly visible within Windows gaming environments.
At the same time, Valve is preparing to release a console-style gaming PC this year called Steam Machine. As a result, the traditional barrier between gaming PCs and consoles is rapidly collapsing.
In many ways, the situation is actually quite positive. The dramatic increase in component prices over the past six months has made building powerful gaming PCs extremely expensive.
If PC-based gaming consoles become the new norm, game studios developing PC titles will be forced to design their games so that they run smoothly on these fixed-spec PC consoles - instead of designing them to run properly only on next year's Nvidia graphics card.
