Sony's Maguire hails positive response to EU PS3 launch news

25 January 2007 8:35 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 13 comments

Sony's Maguire hails positive response to EU PS3 launch news Ray Maguire, managing director of SCE UK, told GamesIndustry.biz that the company has received welcome and positive feedback from retailers over the planned March 23rd launch of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console. "We have had an incredibly positive response from our partners in UK retail," Maguire said. "There has been some great feedback on pre-order take up and the palpable anticipation from consumers."

European gamers were forced to wait for their chance to buy a PS3 console an additional 4 months after the original planned launch, and Sony wants to make it up by shipping 1 million units for launch day. There will also be 30 software titles available for the console when it launches. The 60GB version of the PS3 will cost €599 (£425 in UK), the 20GB version will not be available initially.

"With the strongest and biggest launch line up of any console in the history of our business and a unprecedented stock allocation for the launch period, we look forward to sitting down with our trade partners in order to finalize our plans for a very solid UK launch," Maguire said.

it sucks for europe not to get the cheaper model. guess sony is really trying to increase their profits. and what a better way than not offer the cheaper model.

i predict that sales will be even worse in europe than they are in japan and the us. and 30 titles to choose from seems a little lame. oh, well, sony, underestimates their customers. I guess nintendo is the dominant game giant again

Nobody wants the 20GB. so in my pinion it's not gonna matter if there is only 60GB available.

I wonder where he read this "positive response"?

In the Sony 'in house' magazine or on a Sony created and sponsored fanboy website?

You can tell things are set to continue going so very very wrong when they start believing their own propaganda.

30 titles is quite a bit, but how many or exclusive to just the PS3. Most titles have been on the 360 for a while now.

Sony only has a 20 gig console to make up for lost profits, which is made possible by the people who want to upgrade their 20 gig to the 60 gig, Sony will charge extra for the parts, it'll cost people way more in the long run to upgrade than it is to buy the 60 gig

Same thing with the 360 to buy the hard drive it costs $120can. and you still don't have the wireless controller.

Nintendo is only dominant in profits and innovation.

If the 20gb version had come in at the £200 price it is in Japan they might actually have sold loads.

Hell at £240 the 60gb version would have sold loads too.

But at £425 my bet is they're not going to sell well at all.

It's sheer greed and contempt for the customer......which will hopefully be returned in spades.

You guys seem to complain quite a bit. I've heard too much stress is bad for you. Stop complaining guys and chill. Whoever likes Sony, likes 'em. Whoever doesn't, well they just have to live with it. It's not like sony is reading your complains and are gonna improve........

Isn't it a bit strange that Maguire speaks only about a positive reaction by retailers (who get to sell ridiculously expensive hardware), and nothing about the reaction from gamers...
