TiVo CEO wants lower price HD DVR

Those who are interested in purchasing a TiVo Series 3 HD digital video recorder (DVR) but are put off by the $800 price tag will be happy to know that the company is working on reducing the price to boost falling sales. TiVo CEO Tom Rogers said in a conference call that it is important for the company to drop the price of the device if its to move further into the HDTV sector.

"We will be highly focused this year on moving forward with a lower-priced, mass appeal High-Def unit, which will allow us to much better participate in the HD television trend," said Rogers to analysts in a recent earnings report. "The other clear learning at retail is that High-Definition television sets are the most important new consumer electronics item."

He continued: "Given the price of our HD unit, we were not able to meaningfully participate in that trend. This also clearly contributed to lower sales volume compared to a year ago, when this trend was nowhere near as significant."

yeh, plus doesnt it require a subscription or something? pretty retarded when all you have to do is get a 20 dollar usb tv conveter for your computer and you can record in 720, thats half hd, good enough for me for a 20 dollar one time fee. [ + quote]

Thats insane. Through Dish Network I got my HD-DVR for $49 extra over the standard DVR. Yeah, I don't technically own it but it does the job. [ + quote]

How about some specifics on your 720p recording setup using a USB adapter? I call BS on this -- the best I have seen from USB is 480p and thats 4:3 NOT 16:9. To get the files to look correctly played back on a HDTV requires stretching and zooming the image which further degrades the image. [ + quote] This message has been edited since posting. I call BS on this... i dont use a usb adapter i apologize, i have a video card wich definatly can do 720, i incorectly asumed that by now a usb conveter could be had that did 720. i dont even use the video card though cause a simple gnutella search is way easier than setting up a dvr prog and having it slow down my comp and stuff. and all the stuff on gnutella is 640 square pixel (720 when converted to NTSC tv pixles, i actualy have to downgrade them when encoding dvds cause i dont have an hd tv).
