DivX v5.1.1 released

DivX v5.1.1 released DivXNetworks has released a new version of their megapopular MPEG-4 codec, DivX. The latest version, DivX v5.1.1 is, according to DivXNetworks, "the most significant improvement in DivX ever".
The full changelog is here:

  • Encoder fixes:
    • "Fast" Psychovisual mode is 40% faster than in 5.1
    • DivX 5.1.1 encoder is 100% faster than 5.1 (26% faster than 5.05)
    • Standard mode 100% faster than 5.1
    • Fastest mode 45% faster than 5.1
    • The Quality produced by "Fastest" has been significantly improved
    • Blinking bottom line in "fastest" mode fixed
    • Fix issues with capture applications
    • Various Cosmetic CLI fixes
  • Decoder fixes:
    • Resolved a severe performance hit when using the Deringing mode in Postprocessing
    • DirectShow filter property page had a cosmetic issue caused by using large fonts (120dpi)
    • Avoids buffer overuns with extremly small picture sizes (less than 80x32)
    • Fixed a bug caused by "Auto Post-processing" and SMP/HyperThreading CPUs.
    • Issue with n B frames and Deblocking fixed
  • New Features:
    • Support for generic MP4 FourCC codes which can be enabled/disabled in the DirectShow configuration dialog box
  • Changes:
    • Psychovisual Disabled by default
    • Cosmetic GUI changes have been made to avoid confusion when using MV reuse and specfic performance modes.
    • Deinterlacing is back in the Standard codec
    • Smoother DivX logo fade

So much faster! When using 5.1 I was getting 7fps with a 720x480 to 640x320 resize in VDub from VFAPI>DivX using a dedicated Pentium 4 2.6Ghz with 512MB RAM. Now I claim 30fps...my first realtime conversion!


Comp 1: Dell Inspiron P4 2.4Ghz / 512 MB RAM with 24x CD-RW and Firewire In, SVideo Out running XP Pro
Comp 2: Dell Dimension P3 550Mhz / 384MB RAM with old 2x CD-RW running XP Home.

Which makes one wonder why they would release 5.1 the way they did -- afterall it is slower then 5.05 (my fav is still 5.03 -- then again I dont use DivX anymore -- its all XviD from here on for me) :-)
