Seems to use fewer resources than previous versions. Boot time defrag nice option though slow on multiple drive set ups. All annoying sounds and pop ups can be dis and re-enabled. Defaults are quite well thought out.

best anti-virus ever!

I was pessemistic at first, I doubted any free product could compete with the commercial products but much to my surprise it is fabulous compared to the big M. Like other reviewers it found trojans the big guy did not. It does not suck the life out of a PC, nor does it delay startup by a half hour with no way to stop the AV process's scanning memory, boot sectors and the like. Big Fee are you listening? <br/>I have it installed on the 3 kids PC's plus my wifes. I like the user interface. I don't like the code updates as they pop up annoying messages but for free, this really is a good product. No excuse for not having an AV running, especially this one. If you need an AV product, get this.

My Buddy's AVG was messing up so I installed Avast(not sure which version) It detects all kinda Virus etc that ain't even there! It want's me to buy the full Program. <br/>My AVG is acting up now So I have to find some new Free virus malware spyware programs.

This is by far best AV that I have been using. I install it on all of my client machines. Though the interface needs updating, the software is light, not intrusive, and extremely effective. A+

I have the professional version on 10 PC and Windows Home Server also and I am more than satisfy. <br/> <br/>Footprint is very low and very good protection is offered. <br/> <br/>None of my kids PC has been infected and by the windows home server I am aware when they have downloaded a infected files on their computer in some case it is not an infected i.e. they are doing something not very legal to get their games working i.e. consoles games on a pc etc. but at least I know what they are doing and because of that nice monitor feature I already restored their PC to stable state and cleaned their PC with avast, so for me this is a very good anti-virus to own. <br/> <br/>Not been disappointed of using it and very please from their support also. <br/> <br/>This product has been perfect for my family and saved me a lot of aggravation and money also compare to other solution.

This review is for 4.8 stable version <br/> <br/>Every antivirus has itŽs cons and proŽs, but when you get antivirus for free you canŽt really complain things like user interface if it can do what you want. Interface can be changed btw. <br/> <br/>In short Avast! is one of the best antivirus i have used. F-secure was just terrible (deleted outlooks inbox when it had one virus{happened like ~6 years ago but still}). Also avast found few trojans that f-secure didnŽt found. So f-secure was just taking my computers juice for nothing... <br/> <br/>One of my favorite features is avast screensaver which scans your hd:s when computer is on screensaver. When i first started to use avast, norton or f-secure didnt have this feature. This means avast wont use your hard drive more than it needs thus making your computer usage alot faster compared to situation when antivirus needs to scan your hard drive when you use it (unless you have good ssd). <br/> <br/>I have installed avast to more than 6 computers and only one had troubles, but those were hardware related problems (adaptec raid card didnt work well with motherboard). <br/> <br/>I give 4 because they didnŽt give me any real support, even if your software is freeware you should at least be intrested what is wrong with it.

i downloaded this software and it nearly destroyed my computer . I SLOWED it down completely and it took several hours to remove it Even after removing it my computer is still not right SO BE WARNED <br/>ANTO

Best Antivirus I've ever tried. Been using it for over a year and a half now and not one virus yet. Uses very little resources too.

Ok this is a decent antivirus program. <br/> <br/>The pros is that it does have a low footprint even when scanning. I have a 2.66ghz Intel Celeron Pentium 4. Yes you read right. So that means that I have a single processor that many anti-virus programs just eat up cpu cycles and pushes it to 100% usage easily. Sometimes it is hard to do anything else. <br/> <br/>With Avast I haven't seen it go beyond 79% and that is while having firefox 3 up with 3 tabs, one of them being a flash heavy tab. Also the system overall memory only shot up to about 400mb compared to AVG which would sometimes shoot up to over 500mb with the same settings and while I firefox is up with 3 tabs and one of the sites being flash heavy. <br/> <br/>I also like the real time virus check that avast offers. Can check your email, P2P clients like Utorrent or limewire while you are downloading. It also checks your network connections, Instant Messages, webmail and internet browsing. <br/> <br/>I also like that you can set what folders you want scanned instead of some programs that just does a can of your entire harddrive. I have two harddrives. A 40gb and then a 400gb and don't need every folder to be scanned. So I like I can choose which folders not to be scanned. This is also a great feature of AVG 7.5. <br/> <br/>So it is really a robust system for a free edition. <br/> <br/>Ok the cons. <br/> <br/>I absolutely hate the User Interface. It is terrible. <br/>I can see why some people may confused by the UI. <br/> <br/>Ofcourse you can remedy the what each section of the UI does just by having the mouse cursor hover over it for a second and let the actions of that particular section pop up and inform you what its function is. But some people may not know that. <br/> <br/>Plus when the rotating avant 4 icon in your quick launch doesn't control the actuall Avant 4 virus scanner. You have to go to the start menu or click on the desktop icon to access that. <br/> <br/>Also although this program has a low cpu and memory footprint, it does have about 5 processes running in the background. Again yes this program doesn't use up alot of resources I still don't like that many processes from one program running in the background. <br/> <br/>Also there isn't really a way to diasble some these processes other then just killing it in the taskmanager. Even if you uncheck all of the protections in your Avast shield applications they still will run in the background just that they will be diasabled. <br/> <br/>So if you already have realtime anti viral/spyware program either plugged into your browser or a antispyware that does this feature then you may want to disable their fuction as to save your self a little bit more ram since Avast is capable of doing this for you. <br/> <br/>Overall it is very good. Too me it finds about as much as what AVG 7.5 will find, has a lot of features and way more pluses then a few minor minuses. So I will still rate it as excellent.

Avast is the best free anti virus program out there that does pick up i would say everything.else under the sun. Dont bother paying for anti virus software when the best is for free.

This has been a solid antivirus software. I load it on my computers and on my clients. It does a nice job catching viruses, and does not use up close to the amount of memory that McAfee and Norton use. The only thing I don't like is the look of the software, pretty lame and not very user friendly, but you can't bitch, cause it's free.
