This is an old version of this software. You can also download rev. 1318 (latest stable version).

x264 is a free software for creating H.264/AVC video streams. x264 is one of the most advanced publicly available AVC encoders. It is also the only publicly available High Profile AVC encoder.

It supports:

CABAC and CAVLC
Multiple reference frames
All intra-predicted macroblock types (16x16, 8x8 and 4x4 -- 8x8 is part of AVC High Profile)
All P-frame inter-predicted macroblock types
B-Inter-predicted macroblock types from 16x16 down to 8x8
Rate Distortion Optimization
Multiple ratecontrol modes: Constant Quantizer, Single or Multipass ABR with the option of VBV
Scene cut detection
Adaptive B-frame placement, with the option of keeping B-frames as references
Lossless mode (High Profile)
Custom quantization matrices (High Profile)

I love this codec!!! But DAMNNNNNNN It's updated atlot and often. XviD is no way near as good as x264, yes you can encode in XviD faster but i just don't care i'm never making a XviD rip again. I just start to encode with x264 before i go to bed so the time don't bother me as i never really see how long it takes.

This is an excellent library! You can encode in DVD quality at a fraction of the size. Only downside is that it requires a lot of CPU power.

Constantly developed MPEG4-AAC codec. Quality is quite good, but use XVID for better compatibility & faster decoding speed.
