Blu-ray step ahead of HD-DVD

The Research and Markets have released a report regarding the DVD market, covering the players, recorders and next generation products. According to the report, the market is still going strong and predicts growth for the stand-alone DVD recorders. Blu-ray seems to be leading the race for the next generation of optical recording.
DVD recorders are beginning to drive the market for non-PC DVD hardware, a trend that keeps the overall global DVD hardware market on the rise. The DVD recorder market (not including units connected to PCs) doubled in size in 2004 and will grow by 87% in 2005. "In 2004, Japan DVD player shipments declined, while DVD recorders grew by over 100%."
...
Three manufacturers are shipping next-generation Blu-ray recorders in Japan, while the first HD-DVD players will be available in the second half of 2005 along with about 90 movie titles. In-Stat expects shipments of next-generation blue laser recorders and players will reach 4 million in 2008, not including video game consoles.

Hey...this is really cool, it is going to open the market into a tug or war, cause even some movie companies are choosing sides. Does anyone have a particular favorite? Kinda sucks in a way, cause they won't be universal...or am I missing some information?

223.3.2005 15:55

I don't no witch one to choose?

323.3.2005 15:58

Neither do I...it is like weird. Because now, things are universal, but soon, the companies are going to take sides because of the benefits of the 2 new dvds.

I think the new xbox is going to use the HD-DVD and the new ps3 is going to use the Blu-ray discs.

523.3.2005 19:50

Yeah...all that means for users is spending more money in order to have the best of both worlds. Damn them I say! Damn them! LOL! Haven't really made up my mind about it, just know somethings briefly about it all, and will probably do alittle more detective work to see which is going to be better. BTW...you all see the new concept drawing for the Xbox and the new PS3 model. Pretty hot! I know that one of these threads had links to them. Hopefully I can find them again. ;)

And what about the Nintendo Revolution?!

1024.3.2005 10:55

@indienemo Eh...I guess, I just looked at them. I don't have much in the way of knowing one graphic from another ESPECIALLY in photoshop, so your guess is as good as mine.

LOL! When I find out, I will DEFINATELY let you know! :)

1124.3.2005 11:03

Will they be coming out with burners for blu-ray and hd-dvd discs?

1224.3.2005 11:55

Supposedly...that is what I have been hearing. But I am not sure about that, cause if they were wouldn't they be pushing them out right about now or at least have something in the works. OR...are the new double layer and double sided ones are next gen. versions? Anybody have an answer?

Word is you can buy blu-ray burners now for $1500...

1424.3.2005 12:27

Thats a bit much but they will go down after a while.

1524.3.2005 12:48

Yeah...give it about 6 months.

1624.3.2005 15:01

like when dvd burners can out they were alot but now they are cheap.

1724.3.2005 15:08

Same goes for dvd players! Man, what a drop in price...can get them for like 20 bucks!

1824.3.2005 16:42

I give it like 2 1/2 years and blu-ray recorders will be like dvd recorders are now.

1924.3.2005 17:04

2 and a half, huh? Kinda of a long time. Do you think it will be that long?

2024.3.2005 17:17

maybee not that long but it will take at little while.

2124.3.2005 17:27

Yeah, I figured as much. As usual they are going to cost an arm and a leg...but probably within a good years time they will drop, at least I think they will. Also, let's take into account that probably wholesalers are going to get them and sell them at a really good discount. But who knows when that will happen?

2224.3.2005 20:08

I hope they will be cheaper because I don't like spending lots of $.

2324.3.2005 20:17

Got that right...but they will definately decrease in price since this will be the new standard a dvds, cause they won't be making any money if they aren't selling them for what customer can buy them at.

2424.3.2005 20:43

How would a movie take up 40gb that would have to be a very good picture.

2524.3.2005 20:57

It better be, for that damn price!

I wish I could remember where I saw it, but both those pictures are artists renderings of possible designs (although a lot of renderings I've seen are round for the ps3) And I also read somewhere (howstuffworks.com I think) that Xbox2 (or whatever it is) is NOT HD-DVD, it's just plain DVD, reason being it's cost prohibitive if they want to have it out before the PS3

2725.3.2005 09:17

Yup... That site is AWESOME! It breaks things down so easily. ;)

2825.3.2005 13:10

The xbox2 will be out around oct. hopefuly.

2925.3.2005 23:29

i dont think people give a toss about the release of the blu ray technology, recorders, players etc the first thing that comes into peoples minds when this sort of equipment is released is CAN I COPY IT???

3026.3.2005 07:26

@hursty

CAN I COPY IT???
My thoughts EXACTLY!!! But you know it will definately be done, just a matter of time, unless someone is already working on it, but hasn't released it yet. So who knows. ;)

3114.4.2005 04:20

I cant vouch for that X-Box Photo but the PS3 one is definetly a FAKE. Thats being around ages, ever since there was talk about a replacement for the PS2.

what about EVD: http://www.lsilogic.com/technologies/industry_standards/enhanced_versatile_disc_evd.html I dont think it comes down to which one is better, but rather what China will support. If china wants hd-dvd/evd they will make it happen. If they dont like sony/hp bluray lock-out, they will go with hd-dvd. Its not about whats better, but what is cheaper and most versatile. Considering Toshiba's hold on the PC market you can count on an HD-DVD drive in your laptop next year. Besides who wants to support hp/sony anyways.

3322.4.2005 09:31

I cant wait till they do come out its going to be like basically a console war but only in dvd style. Blue-Ray and HD-DVD are both freakin tight

3426.4.2005 09:49

everyone should wait about 2 or 3 years until all the bugs and the price goes down
