Sony starts Blu ray movie promotion

Sony starts Blu ray movie promotion

Seeing the success of Toshiba's HD DVD promotion, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has begun an online promotion that will offer the "third disc free" on Blu ray titles at participating retailers including Amazon.
Consumers who purchase 3 Sony Blu ray movie titles will receive the third title free. Although the full Sony catalogue is not included in the promotion, the high selling titles Black Hawk Down and Casino Royale are.

So far the promotion has only been spotted at Amazon and DVD Empire and each offers the same list of movies although Amazon's are slightly lower priced. You only receive credit for the lowest priced title in your checkout cart, for example if you were to select a $20 movie and a $27 movie from Amazon then you would only receive a $20 credit for the final movie.

So far the promotion seems to be working as 8 Blu ray titles have jumped into Amazon's 100 best selling DVDs list. Sony did not give word on how long the promotion will last.

the more the war moves on the more this reminds me of the LD and CD video days only with 2 formats anyone get the feeling a bigger/faster disc is behind the curtain waiting for its debut in 6 years?

This kinda does not make sense. Due to the fact you have to buy 3 and u get the third one for free or does it mean to see buy 2 and get the third for free.

IIRC HD DVD's current Amazon deal is 7 free HD DVD movies
(along with those excellent Toshiba players at prices far below the BD competition).

Both formats are so evenly matched its not even funny,if sony had any forethought they would have won on the BR and PS3 fronts with a 300-400$ PS3 but no they played the arrogant card and are suffering from it just to drop the PS3 down to that price to help pick them selfs off the ground.

Sony has played their cards badly but they have not lossed yet.

Wow, just wow.

I see it said here so often but I have to ask, what kind of person is so warped and twisted as to feel real emotions as strong as actual & genuine 'hate' or 'love' for a mere electronics firm/corporation?

Sounds like the sort of people that need actual & genuine medical treatment, to me.

Give it a rest & wake up.

Discussing the events & merits of the 2 movie formats is not "hate" or 'love' for either.

- There's the problem.

Black & white, either or.
Everything must revolve around Sony & Microsoft, PS3 & XBox 360 (with Nintendo & the Wii occasionally brought into it).

Wrong & very very boring.

It's movies I'm into & the impact the competing formats will have on them and therefore my experience as a consumer and movie fan.

That's why I weighed each up & found HD DVD to be the better of the 2; I do not see HD vanishing so as there is only the 2 choices (unless HD VMD makes a surprising run thorugh) then it's only those 2 to discuss and compare and contrast.

HD DVD is not perfect but IMO it is the better of the 2 in every practical way.

I look forward to Sony eventually making HD DVD (probably dual format) players and seeing what they are like.

- I see, so you reckon it's all going to come good for PS3 & BD (which lets face it is BD) from 2010 onward!?

Well it's a POV I guess.

actually it's not point of view.you see there was an article here on afterdawn regarding the ps3.and well guess what it said?the playstation 3 will dominate the next decade and is ahead of its time.it uses an advanced cell processor that some games aren't capable of running on yet.and i think that an afterdawn article is more accurate than you are.oh and i guess how i know this.it's called senior member.

xbox vs ps?well why not everything be about them.they're the biggest companies on the market other than apple but apple doesn't make consoles-yet maybe.xbox 360 and playstation 3 do everything and thats why they're always compared.

and i restate that everytime something about the playstation3 or Blu-ray is posted on the news section on afterdawn, someone who's a microsoft fanboy comes and disses it up.you dont see me going on some news about microsoft and going xbox 360 sucks blah blah blah.and the comments are always the same about the price.yea we get the point BECAUSE WE'VE HEARD 2 BILLION TIMES!

until microsoft starts making HD DVD players, they shouldnt hate on Blu-ray just because their system uses HD DVD.a format war is going and let the sales do the talking.

- LMAO.

Yeah, cos you'd really know.

BTW awesome comment from the 'senior member'
(which is based on what? the enormous number of posts you've made here in your hectic action-packed life, huh?).

This topic was about the movie deal for one format so comparing the current deal with the other strikes me as perfectly legitimate.

The 7 free HD DVD disc deal only started this month, it was 5 the month before (so who could have heard that "2 BILLION TIMES"? .....and there's surely no need to start shouting at people, is there?).

.....and much as I respect the writers here a piece writen a while back about possible future developments is still opinion piece about events that have yet to happen, opinions and suppositions which can easily be overtaken by actual events.

Certainly things have shifted in the last few months regarding PS3 & it's fortunes (sales continue to drop in the USA for instance and Microsoft have just cut XBox prices to $199)
......and who'd have thought HD DVD as the rank outsider with, then, less hardware and movie support would now be doing so well?

But it would appear that the 'senior member' here prefers us not to discuss the news & relevant info......yeah, it'd be great for the forums if everybody with a contrary view to yours just shut up, huh?

.....or maybe it's that the resident Sony fanclub here just can't abide people posting up information giving a better fuller and more complete 'picture' of what's going on right now if it's not the PR, spin & outright BS the BD/Sony 'side' have made their trademark in the high def 'war'?

boys boyts please lets keep it simple the PS3 is in trouble and BR is more or less solid we can see that if they released the PS3 at 400 they would have won on both fronts but thats in the past what we have now is either the PS3 will fail because they will pull it if it dose not starting making tons of money or they will lower the price and wait for the PS3 to regain the number 1 position it still can be done but without a price break its bleak.

WARS are GOOD!May the fighting continue and the prices will
forever fall.Prices usually dictate market-share so the first player to hit £100 or less gets my vote.

i dont get why your still arguing with me?cant you let the article go jeez.like honestly you do have no life.by the way i read an article on CNET.when they compared Blu-ray to HD DVD, Blu-ray actually is better with more storage and longer hd quality movie lengths.if ps3 can lower its price.blu-ray and ps3 will or should win both of their wars.its all up to sony now.

if the PS3 lowers it price to 300-400 that could happen but anythign above that and its not going to be a deciding factor, frankly I think the PS3's time to help BR has pasted....

Er, can't you 'let it go'?

- S'funny but BD theoretically has a larger 100gb-200gb capacity but you'll not be able to use it on any existing hardware.

HD DVD meanwhile has submitted 17gb per layer up to a total of 51gb triple layer discs to the DVD Forum, if they are approved then it'll be HD DVD that will have the higher capacity
(and the whole point of the DVD Forum doing this is to enable changes to be agreed & certified in a manner that ensures full backwards compatability to existing players)

.....and that last remaining supposed 'advantage' (BD's theoretically higher bitrate) is just not needed.
Not when the studios are using modern codecs that can achieve 'transparency' at bitrates well below HD DVD's own maximum bitrate transfer speed of 36mb/sec.

You'll also find that with studios (other than Sony) using VC-1 codecs more and more the video encoding is identical rendering all of the BD advantages meaningless.....Warners for instance are a prime example, although the sound is often much better on the HD DVD version compared to the BD.

Rather hilariously almost ever single 'stinker' of a movie transfer available on high def DVD sits on the BD side of the fence, despite all the supposed 'advantages' BD has, funny that, eh?

Perhaps you should be a little more choosy about what you read and prefer to believe.
Single sources and articles published by 'connected' sources rarely manage to keep their genuine objectivity......and when they drop the facts and start speculating about the future then their opinions remain just that, mere opinions.....and quite often the basis of their speculations is highly partial and selective in what they will tell their readers is just around the corner.

How many 'articles' have you read recently talking about China, Broadcom chipset, the Microsoft reference design & the coming SoC players, hmmmm?

Originally posted by BIGnewb:

- BD = PS3 is not a winning strategy.

PS3 is too expensive, it's a game console and it will not and in fact simply cannot 'win' this 'war'.

The a/v market will look to a seamless move from SD DVD to high def DVD and that is going to be achieved by HD DVD as prices drop ever closer to current SD DVD prices.

The Toshiba can be had for $250 now, $200 by X-mas, the Chinese arrive in Q3/4 well under that with SoC chip based solutions.

BD thanks to it's absurd & almost total reliance on PS3 simply cannot compete with that.

PS3 will not be under $200-$150 by the end of the year, HD DVD stands a very strong chance of making it down to at least $150 when the SoC players arrive towards the end of the year.

BD/PS3 simply have no more big enough cards left to play.

BD will not vanish but as the 'BD exclusive' hardware manufacturers abandon that stance it's going to be pretty much PSP/UMD all over again.

Er, but remind me again, why is it you are still bothering to even discuss this with me?

if sony damns the torpedo's and lowers the PS3 price to 399 it could very well have a impact on BR, however my guy feelign says its simply too lte for the PS3 to effect BR sony no longer has thos cards in hand.

I doubt very much that the mainstream mass-market a/v buyer is ever going to be interested in a games console even at $399.

Just as with PSP they'll end up with a viable market but it's going nowhere in the wider sense.

They talked 'media centre' all they liked but it's remained a game console and for the a/v-phile early adopters the then cheapest way in to BD.

That's nothing like - and never will be anything like - the regular mass-market.

Even if prices do drop hugely at some point in the future (say as with PS2) that's no great shakes to follow either (and the PS3 being able to follow PS2 in sales is massively open to question with the numbers they're pulling right now) it's still the fact of the matter that PS2 never became the dominant SD DVD player anywhere.

Naaaaa, it'll end up IMO just like PSP, a decent little market for them but essentially a dead one going nowhere.

(the one exception to this is if they ever get the 100/200gb huge storage media and hardware out of the lab and available to the bulk data storage business at a price they will pay)

Like I said....the PS3 cant help BR anymore but if it did drop to 300-399 it would regain its lost momentum in the console market and thats where it needs to regain ground.
