EMI physical CD sales plummet

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 10 Aug 2007 5:22 User comments (6)

EMI physical CD sales plummet For the last 4 months, EMI physical CD sales have plummeted 20 percent, however the news comes bundled with the fact that in the same time period, digital music sales were up 26 percent.
EMI was the first major label to offer its music DRM-free and it is still the only label to offer such music on iTunes despite Universal's latest turn to a DRM-free catalogue. EMI has said that the move to DRM-free has helped boost their digital sales, and that "early revenue indications for this initiative are encouraging."

Perhaps this latest news will encourage EMI to keep the path and embrace that digital music is the present and future of the industry.

Conversation to head of EMI

EMI Employee: "Sir, For the last 4 months, EMI physical CD sales have plummeted 20 percent..."

Head of EMI: "WHAT! Piracy!! Sue em' all!"

EMI Employee: "But sir, in the same time period, digital music sales were up 26 percent"

Head of EMI: "What so it wasn't piracy? You mean people will actually acquire music legally if we drop DRM?!"

Glad that they took the initiative and have realized the full potential of the digital music distribution and the internet revolution. It's just sad to see that they are just realizing this.

@PeaInAPod
LOL I thought I was the only one who did the scenario stuff. Guess I need to get on AD and read more.
A friend and I have considered doing short vid clips like these scenario's for a website just to poke fun at whomever deserves it in the media world. Lots of ignorance there for material. Wonder how long it would take for a lawsuit to shut us down? I said a week he says two days. Maybe we will find out. ;)

They are still going to blame piracy. They want to seell the physical and the digital media. They see this as double revenue. These execs are to blind to see the transition from physical to digital.

Record labels have to realise that the sales of CD's will eventually diminish due to the fact that everything is going digital on multimedia players of all kinds and having it drm free is great cause then you can use the files across all platforms.

The CD sales is going along the lines as what the old cassettes where going through when the CD first came out.
