PlayStation phone coming from Sony Ericsson?

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 29 Aug 2007 7:23 User comments (18)

PlayStation phone coming from Sony Ericsson? Sony Ericsson’s gaming guru Peter Ahnegard has hinted that the possibility of a PlayStation-branded mobile phone, a hybrid similar to the iPhone or defunct N-gage is possible and may be in the works.
“Gaming is probably the most mature content area we have today in mobile phone and Sony Ericsson has always reflected that, having games embedded on our handsets for many years,” said Ahnegard. He also added however that the company had not focused on gaming nearly as much as they did on music and imaging for which its phones are well known for.

“The power of the phones we're creating now is phenomenal,” noted Ahnegard. “Smartphones like the W960, P1 and associated families have hardware acceleration and OpenGL ES and are capable of providing gaming experiences on a level similar to PSP, certainly somewhere between PS1 and PS2.”

Ahnegard also concedes that melding a phone and game system together is challenging. “It's a tricky balance. The latest craze for slim handsets doesn't really go hand-in-hand with gaming comfort. Console controllers are bulky for a good reason and have been designed with specific elements in mind, e.g. the need to be hardwearing, ergonomically comfortable, etc. The same considerations go into our phones and there are lots of elements that affect gaming performance, from the spacing between buttons to joypad position. We have to accept that some devices simply won't be appropriate to drive some games and, in many cases, gaming or other entertainment content isn't the prime concern behind the design.”

The guru went on to say that the phone was likely to appear in the future but would not comment any further.“Up until today we haven't felt we could launch a PlayStation phone because it wouldn't be recognized as a true continuation of that brand of products,” said Ahnegard, who then coyly added, “It's obviously something that we're looking at but right now I can't really comment. Before Christmas, certainly... but exactly which Christmas I can't confirm!”

PSP with phone capabilities. Thats crazy. What happened to the good old days when a phone was nothing more than a phone.

The new slim psp should just have a phone it it, it can't be hard to make the software and most of the hardware is already there. Memory stick/sim card anyone?

I forget which comedian it is but it went something like this: "Phones are now able to surf the internet, email, chat...how about a phone that actually works?!"

I butchered it but that's the gist. It might be Chris Rock.

Anyway, I agree. How about a phone that doesn't drop any calls--then I'll worry about gaming or emailing.

How about making larger button sizes more avablie for the over 40 set, they wont do that or make the phones better, but they add add crap you have to pay more for.

What about using your existing PSP with audio in, hook up through skype and a wireless internet.

Any 1 think this would work? Or no audio in.

If I remember correctly, the N-Gage was a big flop. Even though this idea sounds pretty cool, there are already good portable gaming consoles out there (PSP and Nintendo DS). I dont think this idea will be very profitable especially when the PSP can already play most PS1 games and homebrew.

It would kind of suck if you get to the the final boss and you receive a phone call. For some reason, when I come back from a game pause, I never have the same flow right away.

If they resurrect the Nokia snakes game, that would be cool. I don't know how much time I wasted with this game.

they should just put a phone on the psp, inscreen bottons u have to use the d pad to push buttons, and a ear piece to talk. that would be SICK!!!!!!!!! cause the internet would be accessable anywhere. come on sony. i wish i worked with u guys and i bet i would come out with crazy shit that people would like.

hay I want the phone they put in your head. You know the one where you touch your eye and it calls home. Grab your crocth it calls your wife. Clinch your butt checks it calls the cops. Man I cant wait. Cause one day somebody will be doing the dirty and some how call the whole phone list and then transfer to speaker phone and everybody gets to hear your "O" moment.

SONY ERICSSON CELL PHONES, are bunch of scammers, only asking high prices on their piece of garbage. only Sony (Japan) gets the best service.
