Sony will offer 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo

Written by James Delahunty @ 16 Jan 2008 12:32 User comments (24)

Sony will offer 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last week in Las Vegas, Sony was showing many new innovative products and technology. Among the items was a 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. The company claims that the higher capacity Memory Stick Duo is suitable for the company's newer handycams, which record in the high-quality AVCHD format.
The new Memory Stick card stores up to 110 minutes of high-definition video recorded in 1920 mode and almost six hours of HD video when shooting in 1440 LP mode. About the size of a postage stamp, the card is the optimal recording media for HD content because of its ability to quickly and easily transfer large amounts of video content between devices.

It can be removed from a camcorder and placed into the Memory Stick media slot in compatible computers for editing and sharing content.

The 16GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media card will be available in March for about $300 at sonystyle.com

unless you are getting ripped of by a pal newcloud i think you are talking out your ass as a 4gig sd costs around £20 in the UK and across europe (26.462000e at today's rate) and they are even cheaper in spain, italy and france.

This is great news for rip off Sony now isn't it, what's the profit margin on their propertarian media then?I wonder why sony didn't go down the SD route and decided to make their own sony only compatible storage? :-/

be class if it was psp compatible.

bought a 2 gig in NY for $30 a year ago, living in ireland and went shopping theyre still 50 euro. its rediculous.

i heard a rumor these cards are really simple to make but its the licence to make them that costs money hence why only sony and sandisc make them. the more gigs they keep andding the more it looks like they had the tecnology years ago but are space marketing them. next year its a 32gig

Why all the hating. 16gb is pretty good, well maybe not the price, but give it 2 or 3 months then you will see a price drop on the thing. And sony isn't the only one the makes it, they have a partnership with sandisk.

I personally don't like SD, because they don't last long. I transfer files often and much more than the average person and a 2gb SD will start acting up after the 7 month. Corrupt files, missing files, Gibberish files, etc. appear when they go beyond the write/erase level. And they transfer slow also, my ms duo and compact flash card move and transfer files a lot faster than it.

I don't totally hate SD cards. If i don't use it as transfer device its an excellent storage device. Especially for my ps3 with has only 4gb left in the HDD, so I have a 32gb compact flash, a 4gb SD card and a 2gb ms duo as extra space. And since there incredibly cheap, $10 for a 2gb here, I can buy a lot of them for the devices that can read them, Computer, laptop, ps3 and wii.

And the MS duo, or the other memory sticks aren't failures. They are commonly used, so what if its not as popular as SD or compact flash, its still a great storage device, that has great writing/reading speed. And is the only thing that works with my psp :P

This will be great for psp!

Two thumbs down on the price though, I'd rather buy a wii and save $50.

But you can't put a Wii in a video camera and record video on it can you?

Not yet, but I'm sure they're working on it.

Ya this would be crazy with the PSP

1416.1.2008 23:42

I picked up 4gb sticks during Christmas for $39.00 at Fry's Electronics. There is no way I would pay $300 for a 16gb right now.

1517.1.2008 06:59

here is something sickening

'05 when psp homebrew/loader scene took off
my stinkin 2gb mspd Sony was $200us

few months ago i p/u my Sony 8gb mspd for lil over $100

i still remember for Sony dig cams. 1 gig mem stick pro. $700 us
back in 2002

1617.1.2008 07:06

What ever happened to the 8Gb MS? You can't find those in stores anywhere..
Either way it is quite impressive, would extremely handy for camcorders and my PSP too!

1717.1.2008 10:24

I hate to see load times if your moving a file from your PC to that card thats 8-12 gigs.300 never mind i will past.

1817.1.2008 13:54

Is that the MPAA I hear coming? This new card will allow cammers to get high quality cams. I bet their lawyers can find some way to sue Sony over this. Anyways, sounds cool, just not worth the price yet.

it must be your equipment corrupting them then. if they're acting up after just 7 months, GET THEM REPLACED via the manufacturer.
most have at least 5 or 10 year warranty. other's can have LIFETIME warranty.
you're probably buying crap unknown brands. if you're not, well that's even more of a reason to send them back for replacement.

Great for video, but I'd be concerned about data..all your eggs in one basket, etc.

For digital video I think these devices are fantastic: compact, fast..so convenient.

Wonder how long it'll be before we start seeing 16Gb MS Pro Duo's on Ebay for 20 dollars...?

Thats not bad at all i think this is a great lil gizmo. The space however is nothing new usb memory sticks have had this capacity for awhile. This will increase in no time soon.

You must have 'sticky fingers', my friend.

Whew! (Can I come over to your place and have a few beers wiff' ya?)

I think we should all stop watching & downloading moovies, and just crap all over SONY's bluey-ray DRM stuff, (of Root-Beer-Kits Fame) and buy 16:9 ratio digital tvs, and go to Walmart-Heaven and live Happily-Ever-After. (Or something).

Dela, do you live in Ireland (or Scotland) or something? - I forgets right now. Do you wear a Kilt? (Neatly Plaid & Everything). Just exactly, whatever-it-is, are you packing underneath that kilt? Can it be compared with McDonald's "Quarter-Pounder-With-Cheese"??

Much affection as always,
