California to ban energy-hungry HDTVs?

According to the LATimes, the California Energy Commission is actively considering banning sales of "energy-hungry" HDTVs, setting a new efficiency standard that will help offset the massive energy use in the state.
If the proposal goes through, sales of all non energy-efficient models will be banned by 2011 and even more strict standards will occur in 2013.

The public has a 45-day period to comment on the proposal, beginning Monday, and approval goes to vote in November. If approved, California's electricity consumption will drop enough to save $8.1 billion USD in 10 years.

If approved, the Consumer Electronics Association says about 25 percent of all HDTVs available will have to be removed from store shelves. The group also notes that any would-be customer could simply drive over a state and buy a non-restricted TV if they choose to however.

Ah the "lawmaker" do gooders at it again in Cali. By the time this goes into effect, if it does, those tv's will be obsolete and gone for the led tv's. What's next on their list banning t.p. for reuseable wipes?

The tree huggers will not be satisfied until we are all using leaves for toilet paper.

Anyone notice that when Communism fell in Europe, Environmentalism really took off?

This from the same state that repeatedly allowed Enron to intentionaly cause black-outs by shutting down power plants for no other reason than to drive up the price of electricity.

This from the state that created the original mandate for Catalytic Converters on cars...a mandate that states that if the engine is efficient enough that it cannot make use of a converter, then extra (waist) fuel must be injected so that the converter has something to do. (no matter how efficient & clean they make an engine, manufacturers are still forced to use catalytic converters...this has held back development of truly clean running engines for the last 30 years)

I am convinced that these lawmakers just want to show off their power, and have no interest in saving the envirnment...they will even damage the envirnment to meet their true goals.

All above,
Get back into your pick-up trucks and drive 20 miles for a soda. They have the right idea here, if not the right execution. We are burning energy far to rapidly, and this legislation just shows that they are aware. Something which, sadly, you are not.
Energy efficient everything is on the horizon, so get used to it and quit griping.

Blessedon, i don't drive a pickup as i ride a mountain back so i'm more energy effecient then you are. all my lights are florescents whether compact or tube style. switched over to gas heating last december from oil heating & switched over to a newer more effecient fridge.

NASCAR is a sport that strives on burning fuel while flying around a track at around 200MPH.

LCD by design is meant to use less energy than that of a CRTs, what we have here is a state that will make its own rules no matter what. California has always been that way.

i don't know about you but i will drive my steel 1968 gas gusler over you fuel efficient death traps.

im just glade the military isn't as paranoid about fuel running out, they'd all be driving Toyota's, are MBTs would all be made out of sheet metal and are jets power would consist of a very long twisted ruberband.

It seemed that as I read down the comments they only got dumber and dumber. What kind of morons write this crap? Californians consume far less power per capita by a huge margin, than any other state. We are proud of this! Wasting oil and electricity is just stupid.

When you pull your 1968 gas guzzler into the station, remember where that oil comes from....why not BOYCOTT Iran, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia etc? No, you support them to the hilt with your dollars. You think you are going to drill here and use American oil? Forget it...there is less that 40 billion barrels and the USA uses 8 billion per year. Hope you know how to PUSH that 68 guzzler because when you are walking I will have my Prius.

When the next Cat 5 hurricane flattens another redneck state in the South , there might be a lot fewer of them at NASCAR.

Grow up and take some responsibility for your over consumption of precious and polluting resources. California has and you will eventually follow.

What was that i didn't catch that. so we got discrimination and name calling. yes my friend you are far more the man i will ever be i humbly bow to your whim.

the way i see it your shitty Prius and my car both use the same resources. why use these resources at all if you've seen half the shit that can be done that would stop such resource usage dead all together i'm sure you'd sleep better.

will this technology's ever be used? so long as there is one drop of oil and petrol left in this god forsaken earth i think not.

Wow, this was a walk down Memory Lane.
I used to be a complete idiot.
Now I'm only a partial one.
I've sure learned a lot in 3 years!

i thought arnie drove a petrol guzzling hummer .i actually do drive a toyota i dont see the point is having a faster car that uses more fuel when im driving within the speed limits (which my car is easily capable of).

dont know about electricity costs in usa but here in australia they have gone up a lot.29 - 36 cents kwh.honestly people should be able to buy and own what ever tv they want,if they have the money to pay for the electricity why stop them.I dont see the point in owning a plasma tv that uses 8times more electricity than an led tv but if i had billions of dollars to spend i might not care how much electricity my tv used.
