Sony Japan launches TV tuner for the PS3

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 15 Jan 2010 11:44 User comments (18)

Sony Japan launches TV tuner for the PS3 Sony Japan has introduced a new TV tuner for the PlayStation 3 dubbed "torne," a very similar product to Sony Europe's PlayTV hardware.
Torne will allow gamers to watch digital terrestrial broadcasts on their PS3 as well as record the shows to the internal HDD or an external one. The device connects via the USB port and includes a digital TV guide.

Recorded shows can be transferred to a PSP as well.

The Torne will be released in Japan in March for 9,980 yen ($109 USD) and Sony will be releasing a "PlayStation 3 Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting Recorder Pack" bundle at the same time.

It's good that it can record to an external hard drive. I read somewhere that the play tv can only record to the ps3's internal hard drive.

Damn maybe Sony does seem to give consumers the best goods. Too bad the 360 lacks this type of feature with easy transfer to a portable device.

Hopefully soon they will bring it to NA...I am getting tired of the brits complaining that we get everything first...when they have had PlayTV almost since PS3 launchday. Almost every day I turn on my PS3 to see my foreing friends using PlayTV...and it makes me mad at sony every time.

Would there be a chance of this being able to record gameplay footage too or is it strictly for TV footage?

This would be so cool if something like this comes to NA. I would also like VidZone in NA to work also. =/

Let's be honest, besides PlayTV and VidZone , we Brits get everything last.
I mean, we just recently got MGS1. We don't even have Resident Evil...
We even get demos later.

Not being a complete bitch about it, but it's true. SCEE sucks.

Actually that feature has been incorporated in a firmware a little while back so it's up to the devs to use/implement it currently. I know of a few titles that do or will do this right now/soon ~ Little Big Planet is one, Uncharted 2 is another that does this for multiplayer as well as for it's Machinima mode, GT5 has been confirmed to allow this and I think the upcoming ModNation Racers will too, to name a few off the top of my head.

This is great! I love this system more and more. I miss a lot of shows due to school. Usually I have to download them which isn't bad but this will make it more convenient.

Why would people pay Sony for a new Wii? They are made by Nintendo.

Lol, i totally missed that post... So, if the Wii's update screwed up your Homebrew channel, Sony is making you buying another Wii?

Updates messed up your system huh? You better get on that Miami class action lawsuit against Sony.

I don't blame you for not liking your local stores and their suppliers, but that is why we have the internet. Does SCEE suck? Yes...but your PS3 will run SCEA games. My PS3 will not work with the SCEE tuner.
