I think it would be pretty humerus if the itunes servers started to fail when the ticker gets close to reaching 10 billion as people try to rush in and download music to try to get the $10,000 itunes card.

iTunes should give a discount on all songs for this for like a week. Go back to how it was when all songs were 99 cents not 1.69

One of the funniest things about it is that the counter is just a piece of code, like a timer, and doesn't use real-time statistics. It uses a hard-coded approximation based on the previous rate of music bought. This means the 10 billionth song could be sold the day before, or even after, the counter hits 10 billion.

I'm not sure how much Apple makes off each song sold but even if it was only $0.01 with 10 billion downloads they've earned (not profited) $100 million.

And yet they still charge an arm and a leg. The ONLY reason I purchase anything from iTunes, and these being the only thing from Apple, is from gift cards. Most Apple products are just status symbols. At least a Jaguar or Mercedes have extras like interior... But I digress.

Pop, they make over 30 percent, I'm unclear on what the exact number is however.
