Dev: Next-gen video game consoles will be 'quantum leap'

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 26 Aug 2012 11:07 User comments (15)

Dev: Next-gen video game consoles will be 'quantum leap' Oskari Häkkinen, head of franchise development at Remedy Entertainment, has confirmed the existence of the PlayStation 4 'Orbis' and the Xbox 8, calling both a 'quantum leap' from current consoles.
Häkkinen, who is a very high-level exec at the company which created Max Payne and Alan Wake, had this to say: "Currently, we are working with a relatively small team on a next-gen project. One question you always ask yourself in this phase is: can the upcoming consoles really be so much better compared to the current gen? I can rest assure you, they are. It is a quantum leap."

The exec allegedly noted that Remedy currently has a full team of 20 working on the next-gen title.

Each of the consoles are expected to launch in late 2013, although neither Sony nor Microsoft has even confirmed their existence.

I wonder what Scott Bakula has to say about this.

Not seein' this.

It should be noted his original comments weren't in English and some have questioned whether what he actually said might not have been translated 100% accurately (and that he may have only seen the next Xbox).

I'll bet that the price on these systems will be a quantum leap upwards, too!

Not sure how much faster the processors will be, but I'm betting the GPUs will be many times faster, and there will be many times more memory as well...since these are the two major factors in gaming, it should be a massive improvement in what developers can get away with. We might even see future titles that have already been announced as PC-only going to these new consoles. I'd say I was looking forward to them, but I'm not buying anything from Sony anymore and Microsoft quality really sucks for the first 2-3 years of anything they make...by that time, cheap PCs will be far better.

I doubt it, this is the only person so far I have seen saying it will be a huge difference. The problem with consoles is it has to be affordable and with that in mind they can't stick the fastest GPU in there. That would not only make it very expensive but also quite big since it would need more cooling. For what both the Xbox 360 and PS3 have for guts it's still stunning what they can do with that old hardware. This gen everything should be able to output games at full 1080p and hold 60fps. I guess that itself would qualify as a huge leap.

Lol, yea I will prob remortgage my house to be able to afford one!!

I can't imagine how games could look better than they do now, but I used to think that about the first Xbox and if u look at them gfx now they look pants compared to ps3!!

My next concern is how r they gonna keep these machines cool, liquid cooling system maybe!!!

Ooh, a console that will almost keep up with my current laptop. How exciting, that is a quantum leap into the future. ^_^.

Any quantum leap would require the designers to extract their craniums from their rectums, and actually do stupidly obvious things like putting in enough ram to feed even the CPU, let alone both CPU and GPU.

The only quantum leap we're going to be seeing is the absolute restriction of everything, including the banning of reselling games we purchse, and the absurdly Orwellian intrusions of everything we do on, or in sight or hearing of the console being sent back to it's and our masters.

There are quite a few games that are preferred on the gaming box vs a pc. I have a gaming pc but my other comps are used for what they were built for, graphic processing, server, programming. I mean, seriously, many console games suck on the pc. Some are better on pc, many are not.

Further, they are comparing console to console, not console to PC. I cannot understand why this simple concept is so easily mixed, stretched, and torqued.

I think it's safe to say, pc games have always been way ahead of consoles in terms of graphics, when Xbox 360 and ps3 first hit the market people would say "wow hd gaming" like it was a new concept, when pc's could do hd games back in the 90's.
That said a high end gaming pc will cost alot of money, then a week after u build it something better comes out so keeping up is an expensive hobby, so consoles will always do better these days cos of affordability and longevity, i do all my gaming on ps3 now, my pc which was pretty powerful when it was built is crap by today's standards so wouldn't play any modern games, the transition from keyboard an mouse (on fps games) to joypad with analogues was hard at first but like everything u just get used to it!

Typical one-eyed fanboy rubbish.
I have both and they are both much the same.
In fact for 3rd party games the Xbox is usually the better looker.

No doubt the next gen will be a step forward (and if the RAM amounts being talked about are true - 4gb+ - then it will be quite a leap).
1080p is it for the foreseeable future but everything @ a rock-solid & smooth 1080/60 will be nice.

The other interesting thing will be Kinect 2 (or whatever they call it). Fine enough to determine finger motion, facial expressions?
Wow.
Hopefully it can learn to operate everything in the a/v rack.
I still think it will be cool to operate all my a/v stuff by gesture & voice but finger and expression commands would open up all sorts of gaming possibilities.

My bet is PS4 will have its own (proper) version too (unlike Move).

Did you even read his comment before rudely responding to it?

Ooops, seems like he might have been referring to Xbox mk1.
My apologies.
