Sideloading

Google is revamping how apps can be sideloaded to Android phones and tablets, in order to improve security - but at the same time making life more difficult for more technical users. The new requirements will come into effect in September 2026.

Google settled its lawsuit in September 2023, and one of the settlement terms was that the way applications are installed on Android from outside the Google Play Store must become simpler. In the future, installing APK files will be easier.

Last year, AT&T began locking down all Android devices, blocking sideloading of apps for "security reasons."
