PacketVideo to use WM9

4 September 2002 15:32 by Petteri "dRD" Pyyny | 3 comments

Mobile multimedia technology company PacketVideo has announced that it will use Microsoft's Windows Media as its delivery format in future. This is a great victory for Microsoft, who has struggled to achieve a significant market share in any of the mobile industry's sectors.

PacketVideo used to be seen as a rival to Microsoft's media monopoly, as it relied on open (well, patented, licensed and abused, but open anyway :-) MPEG-4 format instead of propietary formats, such as WMV. PacketVideo's most notable customer is Japan's telecom giant NTT DoCoMo who uses its technology in stunningly popular i-Mode platform.
