PeerGuardian 2 review on AfterDawn

4 December 2004 8:45 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 12 comments

PeerGuardian 2 review on AfterDawn Hey everyone, I just added a short review on a Beta of PeerGuardian 2 I got from Methlabs. If you like PeerGuardian but hate the huge resources demand it can give, then you should be looking forward to PeerGuardian 2. The review just basically shows what the project looks like so far and some new features and of course how much resources it likes to use up. I ran my eMule client while testing PeerGuardian 2, so there were many connections it had to monitor and I am very happy with its performance.

The review is available at http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/peerguardian_2_review.cfm

I couldn't understand how the first one worked and I couldn't figure out how to set it up. But it looks lke a good program. If any know how to set up peer guardian let me know.

Why does PeerGuardian2 contain an additional (spyware?) program called KEY, some kind of app that logs keystrokes, etc?

That means you must've downloaded a fucked-up version of it. You should only download from the offical sites. =|

Anyway, thanks for the news on PG2 Dela, I was wondering whether the whole crew had went to sleep! =P

Yeah, I would probably agree with that comment, but in all honesty, I never even heard of PeerGuardian until I saw it (and downloaded it) here on this site.
BTW - I'm not placing blame on AfterDawn... this site is way cool.
If you are running PG, just look for a process running in the background with the name "Key" or "DLL".

PG2 isnt even aviable yet, so what are you talking about? version 1.99?

    I'm using version 1.99 (latest)
For what it's worth, I do think PG is a cool app, seems to do what it's designed to do, even if it's a bit heavy on memory usage, etc.
This is the link from the site where I downloaded PG just the other day:

If memory usage is a problem you can try PeerGuardian Lite. It dosent have any options but it works just as good.

How does it work? I have the 1.99 version and I can't figure out if it's working or not. Ok, first it counts up to a certain number of IP it blocks. Then I click the status window and nothing comes up.It shows a view log with some number. It asks for your IP or gateway from your internet to configure it I think I don't know,Any PG Gurus than know how this works?

    as for effectiveness:

an MIT paper showed that PeerGuardian had up to 75% success rate blocking spoof files on the Kazaa network (using the correct ips, now added to our database)

    heres the paper:

    http://web.mit.edu/patil/Public/805project/

    and the article about it:

    http://www.dmeurope.com/default.asp?from=f&ArticleID=2016

    spyware in pg?

only if you download it from evil ppl, some are distributing spyware with pg (which is licenced under the open source GPL for version 1)

we have info about that here; methlabs.org/howtotell

PG2 is not finished, but I recommend trying the Public Lite version here:

    http://methlabs.org/forums/download.php?do=showfile&id=20

Its Win2000/XP/2003/Longhorn only, but uses more or less the same driver as PG2. That file is licenced under the even more open source MIT licence.

Any questions feel free to post here or on our forums :)

I think I got it to work but my anti-virus program will not work right.Does somebody really know how to work this program other than give a web address for a solution.Because somebody's been trying to hack my computer and my internet would lock-up and I don't like to share whats on my computer no offense.I have a registy cleaner and spyware remover but I still get shit fuckin up the 'ol computer.
