PS3 firmware update fixes backwards compatibility

24 January 2007 11:04 by Matti "Siggy" Vähäkainu | 17 comments

PS3 firmware update fixes backwards compatibility The most recent firmware update available for the PlayStation 3 has fixed the glitches that occurred during PS2 gameplay. The backwards compatibility was a downer for a lot of people, for PS2 games suffered from artifacts and other random glitches, but now it seems like you can toss away your PS2 if you have one of the 1.5 million PS3 sold.

Ben Kuchera reported, at Ars Technica Journals, playing Final Fantasy X-2 and Resident Evil 4 with good results. The firmware update also seems to have fixed the sluggishness of Playstation Store. Sony hasn't yet released any announcements about the update's details, so the official list of improvements and fixes remains to be seen in near future.

    Don't buy Sony.

They are part of both the MAFIAA and RIAA.

    How great is that, huh?

You can now play PS2 games on the console you shelled out so much for, whoopie-doo, eh?

(unless you're Japanese in which case you paid a hell of a lot less -

    they're now slashed to just £169 = €253= $329 US.

Which is a hell of a difference to the £425 = €599/€647 = $840 US they're looking to charge us.

    Less than half, in fact.

Even the regular price in Japan is half ours £208 = €316 = $412 US.)

Still, seeing as there aren't really any games out for it right now it's better than nothing I guess.

    - Yeah but check out the 'regular' price.

    £208 = €316 = $412 US verses our
    £425 = €599/647 = $840.

    Double the price.

    - Don't be so po-faced & touchy.
I wasn't taking the p*ss, it was just a very mild and very little joke.

( and I answered politely enough and with a pretty full level of proper linked info for you, didn't I?)

well, they might be cheaper for the japs, but all the consoles are different. if you get a game, like say.... james bond, put it an a USA PS3, and you will get blood, gore, brains and so on, put it in a UK version, the ps3 limits the blood and gore, put it in a jap console, their is no blood and gore. even that bit where he walks up to the screen, shoots it and blood comes down, in the jap console, it shown as green slime! all the countries have their own gore limit. the only way (probably) to stop this is by using a modchip, when it comes out.

Have they fixed the limited resolution options yet?

Or the lack of SD DVD upscaling?

The newly announced horizontal scaling within the new programmers SDK has been under attack from Bruce Dawson, a senior software design engineer for Microsoft’s Xbox Advanced Technology Group, via the Ozymandias blog.

"I see no sign that the PS3 contains a chip that can do vertical scaling, and this new feature (horizontal scaling) is a poor substitute for a true hardware scaler,” said Dawson.

He continued: "It is a step forward for owners of 1080i only HDTVs, once PS3 games support it, but it is nowhere near as good as the Xbox 360’s scaler."
