Computer-assisted Surgery: European Hotspot Opens in Germany

LEIPZIG, Germany, August 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Surgery in Full HD: Leipzig is now home to the future of precise,
efficient and safe high-tech surgery. The International Reference and
Development Centre for Surgical Technology (IRDC) is implementing an
innovative, comprehensive approach in specialty surgery. The OR system is the
first to link and analyze all patient information, making it a true surgical
assistant. While the minimally invasive procedure is transmitted to a
surgical cockpit in Full-HD quality, detailed patient information is combined
in the background - including prior diseases, inflammation markers,
structures at risk, nerve conduction data and HD images from inside the body.
Three-dimensional views allow perfect preparation for surgery.

The symbiosis between surgeon and technology has become reality:

The IRDC invites journalists to take a look at the future during the
"open house" on September 19, 2009 (10:00am to 5:00pm).

The specialized reference and development center in Leipzig is an
important investment in the future; computer-aided surgical technologies are
introduced and advanced in specialties such as ENT, neurosurgery, pediatric
surgery, orthopedics and urology. "The IRDC is a key element in the
development of new surgical workstations. Surgeons and developers exchange
knowledge everyday here. Further, the IRDC is an education and training
center for new surgical techniques, with 300 professionals expected to visit
annually", explains director Dr. Gero Strauss. Research and the private
sector collaborate in the IRDC, with major involvement of Leipzig University
and Munich Technical University. Its major supporter is the German company
KARL STORZ, international market leader in endoscopy, specialty surgical
instruments and integrated operating room solutions.
