100 million PlayStation 2 consoles shipped

Written by James Delahunty @ 01 Dec 2005 3:20 User comments (43)

100 million PlayStation 2 consoles shipped As of 29th November 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has shipped more than 100 million PlayStation 2 (PS2) consoles since it was launched first in Japan in March 2000. This means the 100 million shipment goal was reached in 5 years and 9 months since its launch. Its Predecessor, PlayStation, was the first console to reach 100 million shipments 9 years and 6 months after the console was launched. The PlayStation brand has a loyal, massive following.
The PS2 has many great features, including backward-compatibility of software titles for its predecessor system for the first time in the history of computer entertainment. PlayStation 2 has become the standard home entertainment system with over 14,000 PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles playable, of which 6,200 titles are for PlayStation 2 alone.

Cumulative software shipment has reached a total of over 1.869 billion units as of September 2005. PlayStation 2 still continues to enjoy great popularity in only the 5th year of its life cycle, and with steady demand for the slim-line model introduced in November 2004, PlayStation 2 is sure to surpass the shipment of PlayStation, the best selling computer entertainment platform to date.

Shipments of PS2 consoles worldwide by territory:
  • Japan (including Asia (*1))
22.22 million units (launch date: March 4, 2000)
  • North America
40.65 million units (launch date: October 26, 2000)
  • Europe/PAL
37.14 million units (launch date: November 24, 2000)
  • Worldwide Shipment: 100.01 million units
Includes shipment to Asian countries and regions including South Korea.

The playstation2, from the same people who brought you the original root kit for the PC. I guess it just goes to show you how hungry people were for a system back then. Their paranoia about people making copies, or using their technology will come back to haunt them. I wouldn't touch one of their products with one of these sony fanboys severed arms. Nuff said. Alright sony fanboys lets hear it.

I don't see any PS2 fans talking trash in the XBOX news threads, do you? If you don't have anything positive or intelligent to add to the news article, then keep your two cents to yourself.

Whos said I was an xbox fan, I was just trashing Sony.

81.12.2005 16:06

the only reason they've sold so many is because everyone had to buy a new one after about a year when theirs quit working.

Can we only post positive remarks in the threads now? Is that a new rule? That doesn't sound like any fun at all.

I don't think my posts were pointless djscoop, thats actually how I feel about Sony corp. They do make some good products, but they try to govern them to strictly. Otherwise I think microsoft would have a real challenge on their hands. Congrats to sony though for being able to move that many boxes of S**t off store shelves.

just giving you a hard time, didn't mean to sound harsh

141.12.2005 16:57

I thought they would have reached this faster world-wide. Good Job?

151.12.2005 17:00

I wonder how long it will take the PS3 to reach 100 mil once its released. Judging from the first two, it should be within a few years...

I wouldn't hold your breath on 100 million for the PS3. I think even the people in Asia and Japan are starting to wise up.

171.12.2005 17:25

i know it's gonna be some stiff competition for ps3. i heard some hot new games will release along with ps3 New Grand Theft Auto Metal Gear Solid 4 Resident Evil 5 Vision Gran Turismo plus there are about 150 games in development right now here's the source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4457404.stm

181.12.2005 17:40

How exactly are they hot new games??? There all rehashs of old games the only thing that they'l include is better graphics. I sure hope sony dont plan on winning with those games.

191.12.2005 17:49

That's great! I would love to be able to sell 100 million copies of something. I kinda want to get a slim-line PS2 since I unofficially "gave" someone my regular PS2 so they could play some games and watch DVDs. But, I want to get another one because I'm really looking forward to buying Kingdom Hearts 2, but I don't know if the PS3 would be out by then. At any rate, I think one of the main reasons it sold like hotcakes is 1) It had the backwards-compatibility, and 2) they had a lot of solid-gold hits on it (like Armored Core, MGS, ZoE, dadadadadah). LOL Anyway, hopefully, their new system will have as much of a positive feedback as this one did, without so many different versions coming out beforehand. I wouldn't mind waiting a few more months for them to actually make the machine as stable as possible, but that's just me.

100 million people brought an over-hyped inferior system great!!! These are same people that aloe Brittain Spears to drink fine wines all day.

Some people on this thread need to seriously think about putting away those handbags. If you have anything to say to another user on the forum, keepo it off the news comments and general forums please, there is a such thing as Private Message. Anyway... with that said....

Yep, strange, tho thats exactly the way it is in press release.

Actually, just to calrify, First4Internet is who brought us the rootkit DRM (XCP). Sony was just the stupid label who decided to invest in it. I'd like to see more action headed towards First4Internet also, they did, after all, create XCP. However, Sony BMG still needs to take a fall for their terrible way of handling the situation, admit they made a serious mistake and appologise properly, and never EVER do anything that dumb again... oh and pay out millions, not like they cant spare it.

Not exactly, any indications from Industry analysts so far show that the vast "vast" majority of people planning to buy a next gen console in Japan are going to buy a PS3. Xbox 360 didnt even get 10% approval as far as I remember... though we'll let the x360 launch determine that instead of relying too much on predictions. Nevertheless, "PlayStation" does have a reputation. Although I do admit, PS2 lasers suck - they just "die". After a while, cleaning doesn't work anymore. (at least in my experience)

251.12.2005 18:58

Ah its fine to have fun, but the news comments were turning into more of an argument than a news comment thread. My point is, we have a whole forum dedicated to "nothing" called the safety valve for example, where that would be better off kept in.

Reading all the posts i have read over the last year (at least) has really made me realize something. I hate people that bash any system. Truly, I hate them. It is the most asinine thing to do, bash on systems. Its mostly fanboys, but you dont have love one system to bash another. Someone could just bash one for fun. Why though? If the Sony PS2 has bad lasers in the first 4 versions (or maybe just 3) then the whole thing is a piece of crap right? That makes you look really stupid. who the hell cares which system sells more units? Seriously... anyone reading this stop for a second and ponder a few questions. Why does it matter if the system i buy sells more or less units? Is it constructive to tell other people the things they do (or the consoles and games they choose to play) are stupid pieces of shit? What benefit exactly is brought by praising one system and flaming the others? I have previously spoke well of the Playstation line, it is my prefferd choice. Its not because of one reason or another, I just like it best. That's just the thing though, it's a subjective topic. Which system is the best? That's like asking which color is the best, there isnt one. Its an opinion. I realized, that being said, that i hate people that flame other peoples choices. Everyone in the world is allowed their opinions. Discussion should always be open, but never should we undermine peoples opinions or call them dumb for believing one thing. The people that rag on others just for "fun" or to try to prove that their opinion is superior without even trying to understand why someone else may be a different way are egocentric and should be deemed the ones who are truly stupid. How would a person expect to learn anything with their fingers in their ears? ludi

I've always loved my ps2 I don't know why so many people bash on it, I think it's because mine has never died on me. Alot of the games that xbox has the ps2 has also except with lesser graphics and longer loading times but it's not like it's unbearable, the exclusives that xbox has are great but i like the exclusives for ps2 better that's how i based my deision on which system to buy. I play my ps2 from time to time still and I recently got into online which to my surprise I found out it was free. The thing I love about the xbox is how it runs emulators flawlessly unlike the ps2 which lags and has little bugs and stuff, and the online must be excellent if they're charging $50 for it. Not just emus but a ton of other stuff too that is impossible to run on a ps2 without it blowing up. When the xbox goes down to $100 I'll probably pick one up to have it modded like that.

292.12.2005 01:35

"100 million people brought an over-hyped inferior system great!!! These are same people that aloe Brittain Spears to drink fine wines all day." Yeah great thinking! The PS2 had no competition when released. Inferior to the xbox when it wasn't even out? Way to use your brain kid.

302.12.2005 03:03

Congratulations to Sony for not only passing the 100 million mark not once, but twice. I've had much fun with your consoles.

Congrats to Sony. They do tick me off sometimes, but overall I have been very happy with my Playstation, and playstation 2. In fact in the past year or so, I've bought and rented more games than the previous 4 years that I had the PS2. I can not wait to get a PS3, I am already saving money for it.

322.12.2005 08:19
Reasons?
Inactive

Sorry but failed PS2s are like every electronic device, there is isolated cases of failure. But because of the PS2's purpose and consumer base evryone hears about every damn incidence on the web. My PS2 is over its 5th year almost. No problems.

332.12.2005 08:28

a mildstone for a company who thought they were on the right track but someone derailed them it nice to see that they (sony) have been keeping track of what they ship but sony should lower the cost due to what it relased and the mess it made with all the rootkit software I mean even microsoft is putting up a fuss the nex thing we'll see is sony candy bars but they wont tell us they put exlax in it.... (gotta make room for more) it would be funny if someone exploted the sony software to trigger a world wide upload of music to p2ps then everyone would be guilty but it would have happened because of sony....then the RIAA would have to sue sony for doing it to us all.....

342.12.2005 08:31
Reasons?
Inactive

Wow, not very well thought out. You can't be charged for copyright infringment if a virus did the uploading without your notice. It would never fly.

352.12.2005 08:38

yeah but if its linked to the sony rootkit that alowed the virus to infest your machine then its sonys issue ... I wasnt really tring to make a case but wouldnt it be like ok now all machines online upload your mp3's kind of like what the self mailers did years ago... open your address book and let the spam fly but in this case all the music world wide would be internet bond.... its just a giggle ... not an idea

362.12.2005 10:14

I wonder how many original Xbox's have shipped since it came out? like a couple million. Xbox sucks. Microsoft sucks.

372.12.2005 10:17

One complaint I have with PS2 is the controllers aren't durable. My R1 and L1 buttons get stuck sometimes. I bought a new one and the left analog stick broke in two days. So I'm still using the old controller now. It only happens when I get too amped and press the buttons too hard. Still the controllers should be better considering how many $ony charges for them.

382.12.2005 10:33

yea but they're still $5 cheaper than the xbox's S controller.

sony is second class, and the xbox is twice the system p2 will ever be.

419.12.2005 15:40

True. The XBOX may be the strongest of this generation, but which is the console that has actually -won- this generation? Exactly.
