PS3 1.5 upgrade causing Blu-ray problems

Written by James Delahunty @ 31 Jan 2007 3:10 User comments (20)

PS3 1.5 upgrade causing Blu-ray problems PS3 owners have been complaining on the official PlayStation 3 (PS3) forums about problems that the 1.5 system firmware upgrade have caused their systems. Mainly the problems seem to focus around Blu-ray movie playback freezing, as well as freezing during gameplay. There are also problems with wireless internet and controllers reported.
Sony has not made any direct recommendations on fixing this problem, but on the forum it seems the suggestion is to reconnect their wireless controllers, and attach their PS3 to their Internet router with a direct Ethernet cable. The n1.5 update fixed scaling problems with PS2 games and also added more online functionality.

One thing that becomes apparent is how little patience early adopters have these days. "We shelled out $600 big ones for this console and were loyal to buy the console as soon as we could get our hands on one," one owner wrote on Sony's forum. "We should not have to rig the PS3 by making sure we have our controllers off and the wireless setting is set to work only on Tuesdays and the sun has to be shining and it can't be colder than 30 degrees outside then our Blu-Ray reader should work properly."

Users who have called Sony support lines have been advised mostly to ask for help on the forums.

I remember plugging in my old nes, snes, genesis, and never having to worry about so-called "updates" and "Patches". Put in a game and play.

thats why they are obsolete now

haha 0wned. but seriously, updates are the only way to go... they allow the system to evolve and add a bunch of extra features... system updates are being featured everywhere now from game systems to TV's. Always online is where humanity is headed and nothing can stop that.

downloading updates for some country is realy frustating.. in here, max download speed is 20kbps.. average download speed 9.6kbps... :p

SovMish I understand your thinking but I have to disagree . Back in the day (god I feel old at the age 24)the systems didn't need patches or any of that jazz. They worked without hitch because they tested over and over. This reminds of PC games which are Always rushed and then later patched. This all has to do with money and how greedy some of these companies are (expansions any one). Thank god I flat out just download PC games for free because I would be frustrated if I spent my hard cash to be some companies beta boy I would be pissed to. The Ps3 is an alpha product at best with a mirade of problems it has. Just off the top of my head it doesnt scale right or even upscale dvds, ps1 and ps2 support is was all messed up, overheating issues, sixaxis going crazying, audio issues,no rubble support bc sonys cheap, and its ridiculously underpowered. Wasnt it called a supercomputer by some sony ass cow. Hell some dual/quad core computers out right now smoke the ps3 and people are starting to wonder is its any better then xbox 36 0 which isnt. I could go on and on. All this for 600 bones no thanks!!! I cant wait to hear when these laser start dying off in a year that in itself will be a sight to behold.

(1)One the scaleing problem has been resolved firmware upgrade.
(2)Sony never promised that PS3 was going to upscale dvd's thats a lie.
(3)Wrong there are less than 300 games that had problems with the PS3 but that number is down now because that have had 2 patch's since launch but Microsoft said go to hell what you need to play XBOX games for until there was a uproar then M$ tryed to fix the issue which has been a horrible mess.
(4)Overheating issue thats 360 not PS3 do some research because the only issue Sony had with that was some dumb azz though it was a good idea at a major retailer to stick the system into a enclosed case.Anything going to overheat if it dont get air.Plus back that up with a link.
(5)Audio issue never heard about this one guess you made this up where a link on this?
(6)No Sony got sued over the rumble issue so they said forget you im not paying for Something that was not a issue until you wanted money.Microsoft got weak in the knee's and paid them but Sony didn't bow to them.Sony paid and so did microsoft but they wasn't going to pay them again to use something they had for years.

I wonder where you got some of this misleading info because what you said is not the truth.Backup you facts please.

This is a very well known issue. Switching from BluRay movie playback to gameplay (on a disc - not on seen on downloads) results in a loss of audio from the optical output. The solution is to turn off the system with the switch at the back and "reboot." It's all over many PS3 forums and I'm not sure if the new update fixed this. I'll try to see tonight.

Oh, if you need a link here's one I've been watching recently:

See post #393.

BTW I reported this BD playback problem with the 1.5 update yesterday here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/460493

I tried watching the BD of Saw III again last night and got another freeze but this time at a different point in the movie. Sony better get going on a fix for this.

(1)hmm RTFA it say that firmware causing playback problems in both games and movie basically making a 600 toaster.
(2)I never said Sony said they would offer upscaling on DVDs but why cant the unit do it if a 39 APEX player does
it. Seems like a problem or intention oversite.
(3)Theres still ps1 and ps2 games that are still messed up. Whether it 300 or 3 its beside the point.
(4)here ya go big shot http://digitalbattle.com/2006/11/20/video-ps3-overheating/
it even includes a video sinced you seem not to be able to read articles.
(5)go to avs use the search function you may be enlighten
(6)Like I said they're cheap. They used Immersion technology 4 years didnt pay up then lost there case in court. This is why we have a legal system people cant just still your ideas. Then in all their wisdom they took a 10 year step backwards by dropping rumble features. No one is happy the rumble feature is gone. LAME if you ask me.
So you were saying something about backing up my statements....

PS stop spreading FUD people are getting sick of you

Like i said you have no solid facts to backup your claim. Its funny how people can make funny of any system short coming but don't have proof to back it up.A forum is not valid info if there is a major problem with any console.PS3 had only 2 major issue old hd tv was not upscaleing & now this 1.5 firmware issue.Like i said the overheating issue was a major retailer that didn't know what they was doing.Just because i spend 600.00 don't mean im going to get a system that going to be problem free if anyone think this than you really don't need to buy any console period. The problem i would have if Microsoft or etc....was not trying to address these issue.Microsoft has done a very good job of fixing the recalled issue's they had last year with overheating & etc so has Sony so give them a Break. So if some of you going to act like cry babies then don't buy any system because we to offen buy system and don't read the owner guide then something mess up we quick to blame these companys & not acccept responsible as a owner.

i generally browse atleast 4 forums daily to readup on the ps3 and things. sometimes i think reported problems aren't as problematic as some may believe. guess it depends on where you go for info. then again may be they are, but i've yet to suffer from any setbacks. well i should also point out that i didn't upgrade to 1.5 yet. i generally wait a bit to see how the general populous reacts to updates. my advice would be to let the guinea pigs test things out before jumping the gun. could save you from a few headaches down the line...

I must say Sony has been on the ball as of late.Pushing Blu-ray very hard which is not like them to do.Then fixing the issue with HD sets that didn't upscale also patches for PS2 games now a fix for the 1.50 problem within a week. Not bad for all the bad press they been getting some just fanboy hate but good job Sony.

I'm still getting freezes after the 1.51 update. The BD movies I watched were Black Rain and Pearl Harbor. Maybe the update was not for this particular issue?

Some user forums claim that disabling the network connection in the System menu corrects this problem. I'll try this later.

I think user forums are an important source of feedback for manufacturers and can pinpoint major issues that need fixing.

Same here. I just got the Open Season BD and it froze 15 minutes in even after the 1.51 update. Maybe I'll try disabling the network like you said.

Also the audio problem with the optical out when you switch from BD playback to gameplay still hasn't been fixed - at least in my system. I still need to reboot to get the sound back.

My foot is in my mouth i spoke to soon. But my PS3 isn't having this issue(knock on wood) is it freeze & locking up or freezes but you still can watch the movie ?

I have not noticed any problems and I have two PS3.

About the PS2 games, why would you play PS2 games after seing and playing HD games??????? People need to move on.......

1917.2.2007 17:31

Blu-ray Freezing Solution- Disabling the network in the system menu of the PS3 seems to solve the Blu-ray freezing issue. This is a working bandaid for the problem until Sony puts out the next update.

2026.3.2010 16:30

I have every update ever put out and my PS3 won't play any of my Games that are on a BluRay DVD It plays all my burned TV shows and all my Burned Movies (AVI Format) I can pretty much use the system for everything but play the awesome games I pay $50.00 t0 $60.00 for. So whats up with that? My system is 14 months old

Mod Edit ~
So you dig up a 2+ year old thread when you should have posted this in the PS3 console area?
