Sony would consider changing SIXAXIS controller

Written by James Delahunty @ 09 Mar 2007 1:56 User comments (15)

Sony would consider changing SIXAXIS controller After the recent dispute settlement between Sony and Immersion, it has been speculated that Sony will use Immersion technology in future products, after the company cut vibration features form the PS3's SIXAXIS controller. Although Sony did say that rumble was technology of the past in the games industry, and that motion sensing technology is the future, the company is open to changing the SIXAXIS controller.
The lack of rumble features in the controllers has been a noted disappointment to gamers and developers alike. However, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said in an interview with GamePro that he’s open to changing the SIXAXIS controller. "We used to have a narrow approach to controllers. If you really wanted to move outside the standard controller, we left it up to third party manufacturers," Tretton told the magazine.

He added: "But now we're moving to a regional approach. You will see peripherals coming from SCEA that will address the interests of the U.S. consumer. I don't have anything to tell you specifically, but we're certainly open to changing the Sixaxis controller if it addressed North American gamers."

Please change the WHOLE controller. I"m sick of looking at that same old thing.

Why change something that so many people like? But the sooner they bring the rumble back, the better it will be. Seriously, a shooter or action game without rumble feedback? Now that is "techonoly of the past."

Rumble is seriously overrated, I dont even notice its there half the time but I think it was a poor choice on Sony's part to just ditch it completely. rihgt682 has a good point though, 3 generations of the same looking controller?

Good God! Why not just relaunch the damn thing with no ps2 emotion engine, and a rumble controller???!!! And while theyre at it, make a 100gb model too! Add another model that has a Blu-ray burner while theyre at it!!

SONY: You only get one launch, and you f****d up, get over it!!! STOP nickeling and diming your customers to death!!! Dont you realize that youre PISSING OFF THE ONES THAT WAITED A WEEK IN LINE AND PAID $600 ON DAY ONE, What about all THOSE people???? Dont think theyll be able to trade in thier controller for the new rumble one, will they??? Not for free of course, that would be just plain wrong for you guy$.

i got one at launch, didnt stand inline for days as i was smart enough to nab a preorder from GameStop. either way i don't feel ripped off, mad, upset or even concerned about this. no one has to buy a new controller with rumble (to the best of my knowledge). People made threads upon threads asking sony to get rumble back. i haven't missed rumble since i got the ps3 and when this does come to light, it would be nice if sony puts out some kind of deal for pior owners. well ergonomics could also factor in to getting a new controller depending on how they redesign things.

i've played plenty of games for the PC including F.E.A.R., and never really thought much about the lack of rumble then. one way or another those who want rumble, its coming. those who really don't care or don't want to upgrade, i haven't seen any related info indicating that owners would have to upgrade in order to play ps3 games.

i actually wonder now if ps2 controllers will rumble and work with ps3 games with the proper connector. i think its like 10$ or something at GameStop.

I can't wait for rumble to be added. Right now, the ps3 can't send signals to rumble, hade, so that doesn't work. They will have to add that in a FW update when they release the controller. PLUS this would mean that steering wheels will feel right and work properly, finally. the sooner they do this the better.

well if you can regain your balance before hitting the floor its not to bad,SONY has a chance here to gain something great,if they take the current PS3 pad split into 2 halves like the WII make 2 numb chucks

they both are mirror images of each other basically tis a the analog is large than the PSP NUB and like current analog sticks its a button as well if you press hard enough you can have 1 or 2 triggers and 3 buttons around each nub thats 10-12 buttons add a left/right switch some where(because we know 90% of devs are incapable of finding left and right)

add rumble to make aiming with motion senceing that more "fun" with this "dual motion 3" controller you get the best of all worlds and it makes the PS3 a true console for the next generation.

It could happen but sony is so sloppy in doing things 10 to 1 we get a piss poor dual shock "3"...

I dunno 400+200+50 and that 200 is a option, however I dislike them not letting silver accounts MP.

Sony has a 600$ system that you have to pay up for in front but net is free,at least MS has not decided to dumb down BWC more than they have in all both systems are abotu the same,I hope Sony goes with a dual motion pad design put rumble in it and do something for gaming for once, instead of its self.

"we're certainly open to changing the Sixaxis controller if it addressed North American gamers"

That means NO new controller in the works yet folks.

Btw, on Live, you can do just about everything on the Silver as you can on the Gold, with the exception of playing against an opponent being the major difference. MS is charging because they have a large network that all the games work on. I'm not sure of Sony's business model, but they have to makeup for giving this same feature out for free. With the PS2, that was by having the developers find their own service, many times they were crap like GameSpy. I still don't see where HOME makes up for this either, unless they build an real economy into the game for making money. They're dumping BWC to save themselves money, not the consumer... and that's because they are not hitting their goals. If they don't sell consoles, games don't get sold, which means Sony loses more money.

Now they admit that they didn't put the proper R&D into this controller, and "if the consumers want it" they'll go back to the drawing board. You know this is a load of crap, because they went ahead and got rid of the Boomerang controller in the first place. Somewhere down this path they hit a brick wall with the rumble feature, had a deadline and decided that they couldn't include it, so PR declares it as "technology of the past".

There in nothing PR to this the Brick wall they hit was the same as Microsoft LAWSUIT Sony chose not to pay & Microsoft chose to pay.If you really look at it Motion sensing is more advance then rumble.Rumble is simple the programmer just got the game setup for rumble when it receive a signal. But motion sensing is actual setup to interact with the game which takes alot of work.I haven't miss rumble at all since i had my PS3.

please re-read the article on AD. they are not "dumping BWC," merely changing their method. ironically it'll be similar to how the 360 works on the subject. it could be unfortunate, but considering NONE of these newer systems have full BWC out of the box its not the end of the world. i guess it was a nice perk on paper though.

that might be a bit out of proportion considering this...

The move to switch to a software emulation solution, like that seen on an Xbox 360, is to cut production costs.

there is a controller like that , http://www.i4u.com/article5354.html

1411.3.2007 07:21

no rumble AND the wireless signal resets itself every hour or so and you get like 3 seconds of no reaction to what you do with your controller. you could be 2 seconds away from beating a level that took 100 tries then all of a sudden.... whats that..... WHY THE FUCK ARENT I TURNING..... FUCK!..... NOOOOOOOOOOOOO........

i thought ps3 was suposed to be the REAL game heads system, youd think the hardcore gamers willing to spend 600 on a system wouldnt like random controller cutout. i know i dont. why is it that the only controllers that cut out like this are the ps3 ones? i wouldnt be suprised if sony didnt put the rumble in on purpose so that people will buy new controllers later when they release the rumble. how come not one other wireless controller on any other sysetm ever has done this? wirless controller technology was already perfect, HOW DID SONY FUCK IT UP? sony needs to work this bug out baaaad.

1522.3.2007 06:04

i think with the way technology has moved forward that control pads should be a helluva lot better than they are esp with rumble and wifi. some games just plain don't need rumble at all yet the mnfctrs seem to think this enhances the game where as it can be just totally annoyin in the least or with wifi pads where some games require perfect button combos and by the time the pad has worked your either dead/crashed or in some cases i've experienced it does somethin totally opposite of what you were plannin on doin. this is one aspect of gamin that needs an overhaul.
