Chinavasion introduces underwater media player

Chinavasion introduces underwater media player The large Chinese exporter Chinavasion has begun marketing a unique media player that is so far unnamed.
Underwater MP3 players or MP3 player accessories are nothing new but the device will be the first underwater media player to play video and it can do so up to a depth of 10 feet.

It can play ASF, MPEG and WMV but disappointingly can only hold 1 GB of content and the videos will only be shown on a 1.8 inch screen. Even more disappointingly, the battery life is bad, with only 6 hours for music and 3 hours for video.

There is no release date known or price, but we will keep you updated.

Why would somebody want to watch an hour long movie underwater? Things like this are pointless.

Underwater as a feature sucks. But if they made this thing to a mil. spec where it would be dust, water, shock, etc. resistant that would be interesting. For example your sitting in a chair by the pool, you get up and a stray beach ball knocks this device out of your hands. If it was mil. speced then it would hit the concrete/tile floor and fall into the water but wouldn't break! Now that would be something.

I agree, I can't see much use for a device capable of displaying video while underwater, particularly if it is limited to 10 feet... but I am an avid off-roader and find myself in extremely dusty, sandy places quite often. A typical electronic device usually cannot withstand this type of environment so we tend to look for the "waterproof" devices to lock the sand out.
Typical things would be like a CD player built for a pleasure boat or a camera with a water case.
So, I can understand the market. I just don't see it being that large or useful.

Now, get it down to 100 feet or so and you might be able to sell 'em to divers who want to watch what's going on on their boat!

Probably a big ticket item for surfers

The only practical use that I can think of for this would be in the shower or bath, but even then why would I want to spend two hours gertting all pruny watching a movie on a tiny screen while standing when I can just plop down on the couch and relax in front of the big screen?

10 feet is not enough depth for me to feel comfortable with it might be nice if you could go to 3 or 4 atmospheres then I could use it for Scuba diving as well.

For those kinda faults they will not sell many to the shops anywhere and if they do it will soon be a dud product for the companies and consumers at large. 1gig storage is no way good enough anymore for a multimedia player of any sort.

I dont know about anyone else, but I enjoy holding my portable DVD player IN the pool to watch it. Gotta love that ripple effect. I just wish it would stop shorting out...
