Free legal music downloads coming via SpiralFrog

This is going to be awesome i really don't mind watching ads and downloading a song should be quick assuming this service isn't P2P so therefore it seems like every song you'd see an enjoyable 30 second ad.

so wait wait let me get this straight all i have to do is listen to some commericial about this shampoo will give me an orgasm then i get a free song?

Yay, now they can turn around and sue us for whatever reason they get their lawyers to find. Although it sounds interesting.

I'm pretty sure this is how this will work:

1)"SpiralFrog" goes to advertisers and tells them how their site works and says it'll be huge.."there'll be millions of people watching your ads" (which will open their product up to more possible customers)...so the advertisers pay "Spiral Frog" for the ad space/commercials.

2) "SpiralFrog" goes to record labels and tell them that they have a new service that is ad generated and agrees to pay the record company some of the profit generated from the advertisers..which basically pays for the users who download from the service.

3) We get free music just from watching 1 or 2 minute ads.

until someone comes up with a download queue system for this and then starts the d/l and goes to bed to wake up with free music and no adverts actually watched lol

Yeah that would be an awesome feeling to wake up and have a lot of free legal music, but anyways i would'nt mind watching ads until about a few days after till they piss me off. Anyways do you think they'll have good,new and popular music or just crappy music such as Netflix's watch now crappy movies?

My thoughts is that it may have some new music, but probably not as much. I don't know though.

Yah on their website it says they'll constantly update their music and it also says if you give them your email address you might be able to try it out earlier

Wait i couldn't find where it says popular music and this is still P2P from what it says somewhere on their website, we won't be able to download directly from their website and HAS ANYONE HERE ACTUALLY BEEN ABLE TO REGISTER AND CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE? If so tell us your experience there.

You have to be invited appearently. Go to the home page and type in your email address. Then wait for information of when the site will open up and/or maybe an invitation to join the beta beforehand. I made a sub-email and submitted it and maybe I'll get invited, I don't know. If, at the home page, you click register, it will take you to the registration page and on the side I saw a couple a top downloads list, a featured download, and a recommended download list. They each had somewhat newer music.

Yah i've already tried to register before but my email wasn't invited yet. Anyways thanks for telling me where the top downloads are, i guess they do have some good music. I'm partially excited!

Well I got in the site and downloaded some music. Very soon after (within minutes), I realized it has DRM in them. I hope someone makes a spiralfrog version of fairuse4wm.

Just got invited, ready to check it out.

I can confirm that with mirakagi and fairuse4wm, you CAN rip the DRM from the music. I did it just fine and converted to MP3 files.

EDIT- BTW, I used FairUse4WM version 1.3fix-2

Does anybody think this will get shout down because now you can take out the drm? This is more like a music renting service because of the drm either way it's free,easy, has no viruses and has a great selection of music! Also why is it called spiralfrog?

Alright thanks and have you tried this out, i think it rocks! I haven't even seen any ads, downloads are a bit slower than p2p, but hey it's legal and free!

So are P2P sites like limewire not safe? Not for viruses, I mean, but from lawsuits? Is this new site just less frowned upon by the RIAA, and therefore safer to use as far as getting slapped w/ a suit? Serious questions.

Yeah my cousin got caught with Limewire, you just need to not share your songs and you can't download like a lot of files at the same time.

I'm gonna try this service out now, I got an invite from an admin.

It's the best service i hope it doesn't get shut down.

Well i was able to find fairuse4wm but not mirakagi the only place you can get that is via torrent so i guess i'll have to do that.

Hey i downloaded it and it works like a charm. I just have a few questions and they might be stupid to you but i'm new to this whole drm stuff. Is fairuse4wm illegal and is the quality on the song equivalent to that of itunes plus drm-free music? And when itunes converts the songs it puts it into .m4a format (is that better than or equal to mp3s?) and it puts it into 128 kbps for the bitrate, is that good? And one more thing, is there any way spiralfrog can catch users doing this and ban thier membership? Thanks in advance. Also this is a perfect method for anyone who wants to try this.

1.Download all the music you want from spiralfrog
2.Convert with fairuse4wm to another folder
3.Open itunes and select open folder and then it will convert all your songs into itunes format (if you have thousands of free songs from spiralfrog leave your computer overnight)
4.Update to mp3 player and all songs will have album art and will be stored in itunes music folder in .m4a format and 128kbps.
5.Now you can delete your spiralfrog songs and the drm-free ones but DONT delete the ones in the itunes folder.

I researched more on itunes plus and it has twice the amount of bitrate than the spiralfrog songs or normal itunes songs, but 128 is fine and you can't even tell the difference from that and cd audio. So then i decided maybe i can upconvert the spiralfrog songs but you converting mp3s to higher bitrate will do nothing more than add space. But, maybe spiralfrog will come up with their own type of itunes plus where you have to watch click on ads to get drm free 256kbps songs.

The SpiralFrog tracks are constant(I think) at 190Kbs. 128Kbs is lesser than that so you are downgrading the quality by converting to that. You can't really tell the difference over standard, lesser quality headphones but you can tell the obvious difference between CD quality and a 128Kbs track on good headphones or over loud speakers. The 128Kbs track will start to sound choppy, crackly, kinda like an old record without the popping. CD audio quality will still sound clean though. If you are just using regular headphones that didn't cost some $50+ then you shouldn't really tell the difference. A 190Kbs is higher quality than the 128Kbs, but it does create a larger file size.

yeah i guess when itunes converts the songs to .m4a file it puts it into 128kbps but i couldn't tell the difference, so should i use a another converter so that it will stay at 196kbps or should i stay away from the trouble and have itunes do it for me? Thanks.

Well you can keep it at 128Kbs if you want. If you can't tell the difference on whatever your using to listen to it, and won't be playing it on anything of higher quality, then you can just leave it at that bitrate because you will have a smaller file. If you want to change it to another bitrate though, you should be able to in Itunes settings. Look around in the settings for conversion settings. And is it just me or should there be another thread for this stuff?

EDIT- Where would a SpiralFrog conversion support thread go anyways? For that matter, is it even allowed?

Alright thanks, well i just checked my spiralfrog downloads and they are at 128kbps so itunes doesn't downgrade it and i'm pretty sure i'll leave it at that. Also is fairuse4wm illegal?

I don't know if fairuse4wm is legal, but I'm thinking there is a good possibility is isn't considering it's "circumventing copy protection." As for the bitrate, I didn't know it was 128Kbs. You can just leave it at that because upgrading would just give you a bigger file yet the same quality.

Has anybody been checking out this site lately, if so what do you think about it? It doesn't seem too popular.

It's been ok for me. I have found myself gathering songs from other places but it had some stuff. It is also in it's pre-launch stage though so they may add more artists later.

Yah hopefully more people will start using it when it launches and it won't go out of business.
