Wii becomes UK's fastest selling console

Wii becomes UK's fastest selling console According to Chart Track, the Nintendo Wii has become the fastest selling console in UK history, hitting 1 million units sold in just under 38 weeks.
In comparison, the best selling console of last generation, the PlayStation 2, hit the 1 million mark in 50 weeks and the Xbox 360 took 60 weeks.

The same data means that the Wii now has a 68 percent market share of the UK console market and with continued excellent sales of the DS, an 86 percent share of the handheld market.

"The non-stop demand for Wii even in the traditionally slow sales periods for videogames in the UK is clearly behind this record breaking achievement,"
added the report.

"The performance of both systems appears to indicate that unprecedented interactive entertainment experiences, provided by a combination of the revolutionary nature of DS and Wii with the increasing number of unique software titles for the system from Nintendo and third parties, are being enjoyed by both avid and new gamers of all ages."

PS2 was almost two times more expensive when it came to UK. That explain why Wii sold 1 million faster.

Price and "causal" fun factor when again for the WII.

Good for Nintendo. Glad to see them back in the action.

Sometimes...simpler is better !

They have obviously connected with the consumer at various levels.

Yeah so did kia and hyundai.

Kia and hyundai umm no the reason they are cheap is because of quailty the cars have most the stuff the cars that cost 10k au above do but dont have the build quality the wii has great build quality just not amazing power.but just look at super mario galaxy that games quality and fps (40+) is way above the 6th gen which shows that the wii is a 7th gen console.

what the WII lacks in "advanced power" makes up for in hardware quality and stability.

The Wii has brought back the fun factor to gaming. Yes, there have been sever really fun games over the years, but my personal benchmark of fun lies in Galaga, Asteroids, Centipede, Zaxon, and Root Beer Tapper. I'm reminded of years long past when I play the Wii.

@Zippy

Yes, FF does seem to finally have gotten to be to big for themselves.

I've probably spent the most amount of time console wise on my SNES. I still play this today via emulators for the games that I don't have and the real deal for the games I do have.

PC wise, it has to be Doom (the original) and Unreal Tournament (GOTY Edition '99.) I've got five computers at work set up with Unreal and a server running from the house that we all connect to about three days a week after work is done.

It all comes down to fun. It just seems that these older games were a lot more addicting as far as replay value. I spent a long time scouring the web to get the complete ROM sets for the NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis, Neo Geo, TG 16, and N64. These systems represent my mindset as a gamer and where a had a lot of fun times.

I agree. I stopped at N64.....didn't get into the PSX. RPG's just weren't what appealed to me. It wasn't until a year ago that I decided to get a PS2. Then I ended up buying a used PSX and Dreamcast just to see what I missed all of those years in between. I still play my SNES and Genesis emulators if I ever have to choose though. Those were my favorite systems of all the generations. That and MAME :-)

I do have to say that now more and more I'm getting sucked into the "high-end graphics" mindset. And that is a major reason why I returned my Wii after a couple of weeks. It's either really old school, or high end for me. I've had enough of the in-between this past year (PS2 and XBOX 1). As long as there is a good story in the game, I'm all for high quality, next-gen graphics (no FPS's for me though - I'm just bored with them). Any word on a POP 4 game from Ubisoft for either of the next gen consoles? Or another Tombraider (besides Legends) ?
