Geohot jailbreaks PS3 firmware 3.55 and releases signing tools Just days after releasing the root key for the PlayStation 3, opening up the console to homebrew, custom firmwares and more, Geohot has released a jailbreak for firmware version 3.55.
Says Geohot:

i do not condone piracy

it's jailbreak time
open the zip, you know how to install
3.55 only
would be pirates, don't waste your time
do not mirror file, link to geohot.com
no donations accepted right now, don't get scammed

homebrew signing source
make_self_npdrm makes valid NPDRM selfs from elfs
it does not contain any info on decrypting or removing NPDRM
NPDRM is required for interoperability of our homebrew applications
package_finalize turns your debug packages into psuedoretail packages
psuedoretail packages install on a geohot jailbroken PS3

i'm excited to see what you will create
open source SDK @ PSL1GHT

While Geohot does not believe in piracy, it seems only a matter of time until an updated version of OpenManager or other homebrew is made available for jailbroken PS3s running 3.55.

In fact, some advanced users have found ways to play games without an updated backup manager. For more info on that, check here: Game Backups on 3.55

Sony, as been standard, will likely update the firmware to to 3.56 or higher now, blocking the jailbreak.

I don't know why someone who's worried about getting sued from Sony.

Is doing all this stuff as all it takes is 1 person to release a backup program for this CFW and bang Sony can sue him for enabling piracy on the console.

He really isn't a pirate...the only reason he started on the PS3 was to enable more functions from within OtherOS...and the only reason he is working on the CFW scene is because OtherOS was removed. Even with his CFW and his pkg signing tools, there is still no way to use this for piracy...the signed versions of backup managers just don't work, and retail PKG files still don't install outside of the PSN store utilities.

On top of that, what he has distributed is 100% legal...he didn't even use any sony code (that is why the PUP file is only 6MB).

GeoHot saying not to commit piracy is no more hypocritical than a gun manufacturer telling people not to commit murders or a liquor company telling you not to drive drunk. It is a given that this will lead to at least some piracy, but it will also lead to PS3 consoles that can use PSN and Linux...thus returning what was stolen from us so long ago.

Normally, I don't condone piracy...and I won't do it myself anyway (not worth the risk or the hastle...not when I have gamefly)...but I almost want to see more piracy on the PS3...everyone knows that the best hackers are on Linux, and that pissing them off is a very bad idea. Sony knew that they would be sued, and they still screwed their paying customers. Whatever happens as a result is just justice.

Played Mario on my ps3 lol pretty fun , also i backed up 1 game of mine using multiman and yeh the ps3 scene is getting bigger, also Dean from the psx-scene will release an updated version of his multiman tonight so we can boot games directly from multiman without any need of hex-editing eboots , still to come.

There really isn't anything Sony can do about it now. The article was updated saying it's not a lawsuit against Geohot an injunction to have the code/instructions removed from the Internet but that's not going to happen.
