iPhone 5 rumored to have 8MP camera 9to5 has reported this weekend that Sony's CEO Howard Stringer has implied that the Apple iPhone 5 (or another Apple iOS device) will be getting an 8MP camera.
Said the CEO:

Our best sensor technology is built in one of the (tsunami) affected factories. Those go to Apple for their iPhones…or iPads. Isn’t that something? They buy our best sensors from us?

At the moment, Apple doesn't buy any sensors from Sony, but there have been rumors that the company has been looking to drop OmniVision in favor of a different supplier.

The likely sensor is the new Exmor R, which is in the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and features improved technology for low light situations.

C'mon, putting a camera sensor in a thin device such as an iPad or iPhone is a lot different than putting it into a camera. You run smack into the laws of physics.

Today's handhelds are thinner than most cameras, and can't spring for expensive lenses. As a result, you can only focus on a much smaller area in a handheld than you can in a camera. Trying to jam a lot more pixels in such a small area very quickly reaches a point where the image is degraded. 8MP may be the maximum pixel count we see in handhelds for a long time.
