HP announces new Slate 2 tablet

HP announces new Slate 2 tablet After announcing last week that they had changed their minds about selling their PC division, it now seems HP is also sticking around in the tablet market for the time being.
No, they aren't bringing back the TouchPad. Their latest tablet, announced today, is the Windows 7 powered Slate 2.

The 1.5 pound Slate 2 is an update to the Slate 500, released in March of 2010. However, at $699, it will be a full $100 cheaper.

Like the original, it has a 8.9" display and is powered by an Intel Atom processor. The 32GB SSD is half the size of the original's 64GB hard drive.

The HP Slate 2 will go on sale later this month.

So, it is like a netbook...without the keyboard...and half the specs...and twice the price...and it isn't even as good as the last one that failed miserably?

So they obviously think there was nothing wrong with their tablet. It was that WebOS that was the problem, so lets replace it with Windows 7 and it will be all better. Plutonash, i think you are correct.

Last one failed because of WebOS. I can't believe they still haven't learned. People want Android.

Windows 7 isn't all bad...there are certain advantages to having a PC OS...but for this price, the market is very small.

That's true, for the same price I can get the Dell Inspiron Duo.

...Or a pair of decent netbooks.

People don't want to pay desktop and laptop prices for a tablet. I wonder how hot this thing is gonna get? I have an Asus netbook with an atom and it gets pretty toasty that it would be uncomfortable to leave in your lap for any period of time. I think Linux or Android would do a lot better over the slow Windows 7. My netbook drags on Windows 7 and it's a dual core with the Nvidia ion 2. I doubt this little tablet is gonna be all that much better, although it does have an SSD which should help. I think HP is making a big mistake coming back, they may have realized how well there Slate sold but it did not sell well until they sold them dirt cheap.
