this utility installs 685 files and STILL cannot play MANY multimedia files that 1 unique file called MPlayer can play !
MPlayer has all the libavcodec library compiled in it. VLC installs each codec separately and requires 684 files.
Why make it sumply if the french "ecole centrale" students manage to make it so complicated !

VLC is a great player. Every time I download a file or just wanna play a dvd I always use it because its easy to use and supports many formats. If you ever have trouble with a file just download VLC and save yourself the trouble.

I've been reading some of the hate mail lower down the review list, and I just don't recognise the VLC they're commenting on. I have thousands of mp3 flac wav mp4 m4a ape and many more formats, and VLC plays the lot. It'll play corrupt files - terminating at the point the coruption gets bad. I also use it for movies. There are loads of avi formats, and loads of codecs which you have to attempt to download to WIndows Movie Player (and often fail to find because they were never intended for published formats), there are mpeg formats that Quicktime tries to grab for itself, and fails on. There's divx and xdiv, requiring proprietaty players. There's flash flv. Loads of other minority formats. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't found a file VLC fails to play at all - except encrypted ones. I have had relatively few cases where there have been pixellation or dropouts. On examination these usually return out to be enormously compressed microsoft formats and sometimes, on my slow machine, I find they play better second time through - which must be to do with emmory caching or the like. What I tend to do is convert everything I can to mpeg2 or flv, that makes things playable on most platforms, and gets rid of some playback artefacts. To be fair to thise who have had bad experiences: round about version 1.8.6, VLC went astray. The developers droppedsupport for web embedded objects, and made some strange decisions about formatting and playback. Since version 1.0.0 was introduced, IMO they're back on track. The current version is 1.0.5 and it's good.

I use VLC as my default player because it handles pretty much all formats. It won't play encrypted stuff - I hate encrypted movies and music and won't have anything to do with those ... VLC will also convert between formats. I use it occasionally to convert (for example) tdswav to mp3. If I have a lot of files to convert, I use foobar2000 (afterdawn folks, give it a plug!) because it understands many formats natively, but is also has add-on components covering dts, ape, etc - and the real reason I use it is because it will batch convert as many files as you want it to. I also use Audacity if I have a file which is a whole CD. It can detect silence, split tracks, export each part to mp3 ... It's also pretty hot at editing or merging tracks. COmbine that with CDEX or EAC for ripping, and I reckon we have a bunch of tools that will do pretty much everything you might want. And all free.

Dear Mr. Movies . . .the reason you were not able to move your slider to a different position on the video was because you were probably playing the streaming video FLV rather than downloading completely it first and playing it off your computer. If you download the file first rather than simply watching it on-line you will be able to move to any point in the video you would like. VLC is really an excellent multimedia player in all regartds.

Does a great job with just about any video file. If you see many slow downs and pixelation, your computer is probably not fast enough to handle the video without some kind of hardware acceleration. Typically 1080P HD movies with 30mb/s video can bring almost any pc to it's knees. 720P is pretty easy. I find another good program is <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html" target="_blank">http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html</a> mplayer which can take advantage of nvidia video card cpu with FFmpeg. On my slower boxes I have to use Mplayer to play the 1080p. VLC, can you also use FFmpeg and nvidia acceleration? Keep up the good work, I use your VLC for 99% of what I watch.

At best this is an average proggy the first thing I threw at it was an flv movie snippet which it played but I could not movie the slider to a point in the movie I wished to go to and when I did the movie started all over again. I've tried this proggy before and found it to be no thrills, it is ONLY OK, they are other FREE proggies that are as good or better. There seems to be a very narrow scope when you read the average review, just because it plays something doesn't make it a great program.

Hyvä ohjelma, varsinkin .rec digiboxi ohjelmien katsomiseen, ei tarvitse muuttaa boxi tallenteita mpeg:si eikä divx:si.
Musasoittimena hieman hiomista, ainakin mulla kaatuu jos laittaa mediakirjastoon koko musa kansion (pienemmissä erissä toimii).
Musasoittimena paras puoli on ääni-valikon "käänteinen stereo ominaisuus", kotiteatterissa kun on takaseinän tykkikuvan takia kajarit normikäytössä just toisinpäin ja varsinkin vanhoja "iskelmiä" kuunnellessa stereo-vaikutus vaikuttaa...
Jos mediakirjaston saan vielä toimimaan niin, poistan muut playerit!!!

Siinä missä muut playerit vaativat kodekkien kanssa värkkäämistä toistaa vlc nopeammin ja helpommin myös vanhemmat videot. Eipä jättänyt pulaan digi-boksin tallenteiden kanssa.

Tätähän nyt ei käytä kun aloittelijat jotka ei ymmärrä sanaa codec. Jos käy edes etäisesti mielessä katsoa jotain HDmateriaalia niin tämän voi unohtaa välittömästi. On myös niin raskas että koneesta on syytä löytyä potkua jos ei halua käyttää oikeita playereitä. Cccp(mukana tulee 2 playeriä)+CoreAVC kun halutaan nauttia katselusta ilman päänsärkyä. Pitäkee kivaa tämän kanssa.

I have been using VLC Player for along time and I find it one of the best players I have ever encountered. VLC Player plays just about anything and plays it very well. I don't find it has any problems at all. My only grip is I would like the EQ to be manually set the way you want it not with all the presets (I hate presets) I have some 34,000 different media files and it plays em all. A great peice of FREE software so why complain if its free.

this item is tres muy number-one. once installed (very ez) just open desired file and vlc takes charge. some self-proclaimed "god" might find it troublesome but for anyone who didn't sleep through kindergarten, running it is a breeze.

I always loved VLC and will probably get an earlier version but with this version I am having playback issues. All the files are avi format but some play with no issues and some will start pixelating and having sluggishness in the middle. But when I play it on Windows media there is no issues. So I will just get a earlier version.

I have used this media player software off an on over the years with mixed results. But overall it has been a great player for all video and audio formats particularly rare formats with rare codecs. This particular VLC player version is EXCELLENT! Its easier to use, it played every format I threw at it and the overall quality is better. I can say VLC v0.9.2 is the best release yet of this very versatile software. Up until now I prefeered to use PowerDVD, Windows Media Player, DivX Player and VLC Player to player different video formats. As I am so impressed with the quality of the latest VLC Player v0.9.2 it has become my default all in one media player for Video and DVD. Download and try it... you won't be disappointed. You can easily uninstall it if you don't like it.

What an absolute pile of sh*t!! It USED 2 have some promise, with the nifty tweakability - but of course, it was not an option as it couldn't even play MP3 files without skipping! Y the fuk do retards even release software that can't play MP3 out of the box?!?! Reminds me of KMPlayer, where half the settings tools don't even function (*they're just trying 2 conceal they have rolled FFDSHOW into submenus). N E way, they have now succeeded into making VLC's EQ section utterly clunky & useless - much WORSE than before. It's not 2 say the player doesn't work. It's just 2 say it's utter GARBAGE compared 2 MPC or MPC-HC + FFDSHOW, or GOM. There are only 2 useful media player programs in the world - MPC, & GOM. Everything else is GARBAGE! (like this VLC junk) so believe me, don't waste your time. I've tried them all. Ideally somebody should roll a tab interface into GOM & MPC so instead of having 'docking' junk, just displays pages like a Firefox browser or whatever, such as 'EQ', 'Video' (& sub-tabs), etc :) That would B awesome!

A decent app, but no blu-ray support. For that we have to use the abominable powerdvd bloatware. Media Player Classic will play some blu-ray streams..but not the whole disc the way powerdvd does.

great Software For those that need media player that works. its bit by bit Reading means that even files that are partialy complete will work. Due to the bit by bit reading of media files it may cause Subtitle overlay issue's, it has advance feature's in the option's that most people dont know what they do. does tend to Color Scramble on older hardware with Certain Files. All in All an Excellent Player. It deserves At least a 4/5.

I started to download some files with .flv and I could not open them with my regular player so I had to go in search of a program that was acceptable. Good thing my search lead me to afterdawn.com and I found this program VLC. It works great!! Install in a minute and I was able to open all my files with it. No Problems so far..

The Net is full of different formats in audio and video. In audio, which is I deal with, there is some normal formats like mp3, ogg, flac, etc. etc. and some more sophisticated like 5.1 dts or dolby. VLC handles all of them without need of codecs, which are all embedded in the program. If it is needed a solid player VLC is the tool, if is beauty of design or a analytic tool VLC won't be the right player. Anyway is a tool that cant be missed if you are an audiophile.

Although its very handly with the fact it can play almost any multimedia file in almost any format, I particulary don't like it. It has a very poor handling of decoding some videos, which results in wierd video output. It renders subtitles poorly that of which it may overlap another subtitle text, may have un and does not support typesetting. The UI (user interface) is not very friendly, espcially the slider which does not effectively time-shift, unless you change skins. Otherwise, for people who are not entirely concerned about these faults, who don't have time searching for codecs, decoders, players, etc, or people who just want things simplistic, this is the player for you.

Plays ALL of my ogg and avi files without a problem. Freedom for codecs means you can play any raw video file even with dual audio and video tracks.

I still use Winamp for my music though. I like to get cool skins and VLC lacks in that department.

The Rating is actually - for me - 4 to 5. I travel a lot and I have my Notebook as a tool with me. More then 7 or 8 times a week, you come accross at a customer or a friend, with a DVD or similar, home made or commercial.
Up to now, I had never the case, that VLC 0.8.5 refused to play any ov the disks. THE IDEAL PLAYER in your Notebook.

Woohoo! Service discovery is back! (That's mainly what I really use it for, because I don't like playing with my winamp playlist very often... I still don't.) This is a really feature-rich player, if only there was a bit more support on the skin side of things... I have found and also have made my own skins for bsplayer that I like, so I use that more often. BSPlayer's relative lower system requirements compared to most other players is also a plus, but I'm not inclined to pay for it when there's something so wonderful as VLC player to do whatever the free one can't do.

It's independency on other codecs makes it easier to find out if you have a codec problem or not and which codecs may be the culprits. VLC is also better at playing "corrupted" files than I have ever seen in any other player. I'm sure there's a few other things I haven't mentioned, but that's a good start.
