Sony cuts $20 from PlayStation 2

Smart move to try and get more people to buy the ps2 with it being so cheap, xbox360 will lose some sales.

yet it will never be 99.00! even after ps3 comes out.

The PS2 is getting really old, soon enough, there won't be any games released on it, and it will be useless.

I remember PS 1 paying $50.00 for mine. They will be priced lower to cler out inventory as soon as PS 3 gets ready for release.

Thier getting all they can out of the PS2 it was a funky built systm plus all the time they spent tweaking and adjusting it thru 13 or 15 revisions its a wonder its 130 in the states at all. altho I always buy used and its more or less been good to me.

I'm sure Sony will lower the price of they PS2 to a $100 before they take it off the market forever, Sony would probably do whatever it takes to get some final sales of the PS2.

I don't think the price is going to drop any more...at least not the retail. Because by the time PS3 is released, Sony will be putting all of their resources into that, shortly before ceasing PS2 production.

Really expensive old machine,the cube is cheaper and more powerful.

neo1000 UUmmm no PS2 has more power ,and ocne fixed (moded for better DVD paly and free regoin) its a overall better system you cant even mod the Cube right sicne all the chips fry the system sooner or later plus the backup thru PC....it gives my a headache just thinking about it...

plutonash Rephraze,the PS2 can do more,ad it is better than the DC altho it did take them awhile to code right for it,even still..you have a point the Cube ran better and codeing for it had got even better....but the discs are limted in size mmmm try lookign at the whole package and not jsut "horsepower"...

Nah, PS2 may well be slower but I still think it the best of all the Millennium generation consoles (DC, PS2, GC, Xbox), even if it had some early hardware problems.

sammorris And games the reason why the PS3 is going to kick everyones ass is simpely they have the most devs makeing stuff for thier system. Nintendo could pull a que and realse above avrage qauilty games but eh..I dont see it happening the REV will most likely be like the GC with soem qauilty and some iffy titles and haveing a large online libary of games for a monthly fee ,and with that it should easily claim 2nd spot the 360 has qauilty issues and it seems they already make revision number 2 of it to fix soem of its problems..but still it has a low amount of games and soemthign like 1/4th will be qauilty the rst will be PC ports and crap.

You could give me one and I still would not want a PS2! The xbox has better Graphics and a HD! why would I want out dated Tech!? and though a PS3 will be a tad better Hardware wise than the 360..at least on paper it is...I still will go with a 360 if I evere get an HD TV as I trust sony now even less than I do Microsoft. Pluse the fact that the PS3 is using the new Cell CPU I am sure it will be years before the coders learn how to take advantage of a new CPU.....Plus the 360 is here now and has a load of games NOW! But I am in no rush for a new Game system till I get HD TV... As with out HD you can not take full advantage of eaither system. migraine@knology.net

It WILL make it to being $100.00 but it'll take time. Right now taking 20 bucks off of the PS2 cost is smart seeing that the next gen systems are coming out.

yeah, I agree with that one, but hope the revolution outdoes the 360. That's not really an I hate microsoft dig, but just that the revolution is a different console. The 360 basically does what the PS3 does, to a lesser extent, whilst the Revolution is an entirely new concept.

PS2 dropping prices, in my book that equates to an average dvd player, because very soon, its usage will become obsolete.

I will buy a PS2 when it gets about 80-100 dollars! For the dated tech in it, that is my price point! I bought the XBox when it first came out, and REGRETTED IT INTENSELY! Why? Because the games were priced so high, and the system was priced so high, that after I bought it, the system IMMEDIATELY had a HUGE price drop (to the tune of 100 dollars!) and I felt I got TAKEN! That is why I buy XBox games used, AND, if they are scratched badly, I use a backup program I found to make a backup copy and play that backup!

to ME the 360/Xbox is a ok system worth getting but gttting last becuse of the games it will/should have,the PS3 is well not goint to screw up not with the new tech and PS1 and PS2 support,altho llooking at what I got currently (GC,PS2,Comp) and what I had 3-4 years ago (Comp,GC,PS2,PSX,N64,SNES,NES,Sega gen,Sega CD) what I need next is either to get a DS sicne mine died or get a Xbox altho I need to get a comp part >< damn thing been suxing money this year *L* PS3 is great and aall but it will take at least 1 whole years woth of games for me to be drooling for it,unless the 360 gets fixed and a price drop around 200 with HD...well...even then not enough Xbox support to make it woth while have not I 50 a month for a new 360 game...if that is I can find more than 3 games I like 0-o the Xbox is good enough for me to add to my collection I want Ninja gadain *L* and mabye DOA vvollyball...BOUNCEY! To be honest, I can only think of one rare occasion when I'd need both - when my steering wheel is attached and I want to get a picture of a photodrive onto my USB disk. That really is it.

The PS2, will succumb in time, to disinterest, and format changes in movie viewing. It will become a relic of the past...just a matter of time.

I find the best way to judge that is look at what else is on there.

The PS2 is pretty crappy, after a while, I have to say. 99.99$ would be a reasonable price for it.

How is it crappy? It's not as fast as recent stuff, but it was never crap. I got bundles of fun out of mine, and I didn't even buy that many games for it. I'd sooner play it than an Xbox 360 in all honesty.

No you're right, I don't play mine that much any more, and of late DVDs have been run on my PC, despite the slightly smaller screen (156 sqin versus 226 on the TV) I can interface 5.1 on the PC rather than just 2.2 on the PS2 (although these are arguably 7.1 and 4.2 because due to the cable routing setup I use, the TV speakers can play the PC and PS2 signals. The PS2 audio cable I use has both a 2Phono lead going to the hifi and a scart cable that also carries audio so the TV speakers make noise too. Since the PC is connected to the front speakers and the hifi via splitters, the PC's signal goes along the splitters and into the TV! (I couldn't work out where the noise was coming from when both the hifi and the 2.1 were off!)

Who doesn't have a ps2,xbox,or gcn already? If you don't I would just wait for ps3 at this point and if you don't have the cash why not opt for a wii? The wii will be under $250 I liked the ps2 and got plenty of joy out of it.I know the price on ps3 isn't for everyone but for me I know I will get alot of use out of it.My pc was $1800 after tax, a new gfx card,and psu and I don't regret it because I get alot of use out of it :)

Yep. That's what most of us will be doing. Wii first, then PS3 when it becomes reasonable. Alright £425 is reasonable given the production cost, but it's still expensive!

No, it isn't $3000 worth, it just appears like it in terms of what PCs currently offer. You would never be able to extract as much out of the cell and RSX as you could out of four dual core P4s and two 6800s in SLi.

That's true but in fairness pc games require much more power to run the same games on consoles with less power for instance doom3 would never run on a p2 700mhz cpu on a pc but yet it did it on an xbox with those same specs and only a 64mb gfx card on xbox. another example is emulators.We still can't emulate anything current gen on a pc without having at least twice the specs much less next gen by the way don't forget the bluray which will be $1200 retail alone at least.

Well, hmmm, it costs £350 or so to make tmk, so yeah that's a costly addition. PC retail drives won't quite be as much as $1200, but they will be hefty. Yeah I appreciate windows makes PC games need far better hardware (although PC game designers are going out of control making some games unplayable at certain options on any system - £200 or £4000)

Yeah they're proper TV ones though, and DVD recorders for the TV are currently how much? A good £150 for a good one, at least. Whereas a good DVDRW drive for the PC can be had for £25 now.

The actual exchange rate at present is about £540 to the $1000, but with imports and VAT added, it works out at more like £670 to the $1000 for computer stuff. What's this L thing you're talking about?
