PSP sales double in Japan

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 24 Dec 2007 3:00 User comments (20)

PSP sales double in Japan For the week ended December 16th, sales of the Sony PSP handheld have more than doubled in Japan, with the system selling 184,610 units for the week as compared to 91,481 units the previous week.
Making the numbers even more surprising is the fact that the boost comes without any significant new PSP software releases during the period. In fact, only three PSP games had spots in the top fifty best-selling softwares.

Not surprisingly however, the Nintendo DS still lead the way with 222,144 units sold in the past week, backed by 28 games in the top fifty.

In console news, the ever popular Wii moved 170,558 units, with the PlayStation 3 (63,720) and Xbox 360 (8,561), lagging behind.

now wait for that stupid raciest comment that usually pop-up, being Japanese people dislike anything that is American.

this is good news for Sony for a change, but i never really liked the PSP. Maybe when (if) when GT4 Mobile gets released i might be interested...

Why should they like the Xbox? Japan is home to the majority of good console makers, (Nintendo, Sony...etc) They've had better quality for years. Japan didn't buy the original XBox because the only game it had was Halo. Why trust Xbox when you have the good ol' faithful PS2? Since Halo didn't catch on, neither did Halo3, and therefore low sales on the 360. 'nuff said. And now Wii is the best selling consoles. Perhaps as a country they have are much more savy technology shoppers?

Actually Japanese like American Culture just alot of times Americans come here and are assholes so it turns them off to us personnally.

And the high number of psp sales doesn't suprsise me i see Japanese people commuting on the train using the psp and alot of DS's.

I have spent 3 years in Japan so far and will probably be spending another 3. Japanese are the most respectful, helpful people i have ever met. Japan is a great place for anyone to visit. Just try to get out of the city a little.

i dont see how that can be a racist comment.

lol @ all the fallacies in this comment thread.

If you are going to generalize that "japan hates/loves Americans/American culture," you're pretty much setting yourself up to sound naive and uninformed.

I love the fact that the PSP is still making good press. My PSP is the greatest small media device to have in my opinion. You cant go wrong with all the nice options you get.

if the psp was cheaper i'd own one for sure. thats the reason it laggs in sales compared to the ds. price it at $120 and get them head to head and lets see what happens.

Ya doubled sales after the compentiion sold 3X as many units....

Sony dose not know how to sell new formats or how to price stuff..

what does UMD have anything to do with the sales? what about the cartridge nintendo and atari uses? and the mini disk that the gamecube uses? so what differance does the umd make for sales? you logic and hate seems to cloud your judgement.

1325.12.2007 12:33

nintento stuff is cheap that's the reason

cuz they just added a touch screen to the gba and a new box and controller to the gamecube doesn't mean they are next-gen, their stuff is lame i bet thta if mario and zelda were on other consoles those numbers would be a lot diferent

Hate? I have two PSPs.
Logic? They stopped producing UMD movies/music/whatever.

Perhaps "you logic" is getting in the way of thinking about what I said ;)

UMD is the reason why the PSP failed, if they went after the new format by offering free UDM versions of their DVDs in with the DVDs for no extra cost and then offered special edition UDM movies then they would ave sold 25-50% more units, that with lowering the PSP to 199$ 3 years ago would have doubled their sales then, but they refuse to innovate price like nintendo refuses to innovate storage.

bah, still waiting for the ceramic white PSP slim in the US... The PSP fat is still getting a lot of play. I agree with the poster's comment about commune gaming, DS and PSP are the best you can do on the train. While i like the DS's touchscreen and all, but the PSP can do remote play with the PS3 (only drawback is hot spots). I haven't upgrade my PSP fat's FW yet, but will do when i get a slim (the slim black was sold out in most places here as well).

The sales in japan will even go lower after what the U.S govt is trying to do to china. Its how low can we go :P
