Steve Jobs unveils $199 iPhone 3G at WWDC

Steve Jobs unveils $199 iPhone 3G at WWDC In his keynote address to open Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) on Monday, Steve Jobs officially announced the iPhone 3G. Perhaps the most important revelation was the price, which at $199 for the entry level (8GB) model is half the original's current $399 pricetag. He indicated that the price was based on research where consumers who have so far passed on the iPhone said cost was the biggest barrier.
Not surprisingly he didn't talk about his previous prediction of 10 million iPhones sold by the end of 2008. Why is that significant? Maybe because at the current (pre-iPhone 3G) prices it appears unlikely to happen. In fact despite "selling out some number of weeks ago," Jobs said only 6 million have been sold in the approximately 11 months since the initial launch on June 29 of last year.

Jobs showed off the speed difference between the iPhone 3G's "amazingly zippy" performance on newer 3G networks, compared with the EDGE connection available to owner's of the original. The same web page that took nearly a minute to load using an EDGE connection took just over 20 seconds across 3G. He also compared it to a Nokia N95 and Treo 750, which reportedly took 33 and 34 seconds respectively to load the same page (using 3G) while delivering it in a less complete mobile format. He also pointed out that 3G speed is "actually approaching Wi-Fi."

Other changes include the use of plastic instead of aluminum for the back (presumably to bring production costs down), as well as the addition of a 2 Megapixel camera and GPS.

Near the end of his presentation a map showed 70 countries where the 3G iPhone will officially be available while 'It's a Small World' played in the background. By contrast, the original iPhone is only offered in 6 countries. The iPhone 3G's initial launch, on July 11, will actually only include 22 countries, with the other 48 planned by year's end.

Just watched the WWDC 2008 keynote and I can say that the new iPhone 3G is SWEET!!!... The main barrier for all(till now) has been the expensive price making it difficult to afford especially if you are out of money. The second barrier is the limited amount of countries where Apple ships its iPhone's. Well Apple changed that and took a big step towards the future, making iPhone available to everyone.
I live in Finland and I knew from the start that iPhone was my choise. Nokia will release a multi-touch capable phone,(which will probably have that crappy Symbian) but ill stick with iPhone instead. Its just WAY DAMN COOL and cheap!!!

199$ for 8GB...iPhone 3G
Jobs wanna kill all other cell phone manufacturer?

What? 3G speed is close to wifi? O_o

3G is only 384kbps max. Wifi go beyond Mbps.

Its 3.5G that have speed like wifi.

And iphone 3G only support 3G. But nokia, even the entry level 6120classic already support 3.5G.

But 384kbps using 3G is already fast for browsing web :D

As an iPhone owner, there are still some unanswered questions. These include a copy and paste feature and mms. As for inegrity, is the glass shielding in front less prone to crack so easily? Concerning the previous iPhone, will repair cost be less? The last two concern me as my iPhone's glass shielding shattered in one fall, previously it had never been dropped. The repair cost $250 which I was willing to shell out. Now I'm just going to purchase the 3G iPhone but would still like to have my current one fixed, for free.

Off to burn my first iPhone...but seriously, GPS, 3G, I thought'd it be $799! But $199?!?!?! That's just craaaaaaaazzzy.

Maybe not the Apple faithful, who will blindly replace their 1st gen phone with the new one!

The news sounds great. I hope that AT&T offers some type of rebate incentive to drop it another $50-$100.

lol u guys are all fools (jk).. NEVER.. and i say never.. buy the first model of anything.. i got a ps2 with the V7 revision.. and it works the best when modding.. i got the ipod video 80GB which i waited for.. and its the complete mod friendly one.. not the new classic.. i forget the generation.. prob 5.. i knew the 1st gen iphone wasn't going to make it.. i have been waiting on the 3G since i heard about a touch phone ipod.. and u guys should have done the same.. and the new price is most likely with a 2 year contract. thats where they get ya.. they let u decide that the price is good.. a month before release.. then at release they inform you that you must sign with another 2 years... and blah blah blah.. all i know is.. wait for the right time to buy.. look what happened with the xbox 360... its completely different from launch.. im just talking about different products.. im not a fan of anything but music and pottery.

Well at least Apple may at last be comming to its senses that price is always one of the main aspects that consumers look at when choosing wat to purchase. Their goal target needs to be re-defined.

Only Apple can sell a device without a replaceable battery, has no buttons and lacks more features than any other smart phone. Also, the cost of ownership is about 3 times what I'd pay with a regular phone and data plan. I think making it plastic was to make a point that Apple can sell anything, even dogshit.

Isn't that the truth but pretty sells these days and functionality is just an after thought most of the time, I think the average Joe wears a skirt.

I have one friend who has both the iPhone and the better Blackberry Phone he likes the iPhone, becuase it is pretty and the screen is very nice, but for funtionality the iPhone doesn't even compare.

borhan9 also has a very good point which could help Apple with thier iMAC line and that is price point. MAC's would sell it they weren't x2 to x3's as much as the average PC.

Needless to say, I'm sure new owners will be happy at the price. I'm pissed that I shelled out $798.00 for two of them when they first came out. Live and learn I guess. Think I'll just sit this one out and see what comes down the pike six or so months from now. LOL.

2013.6.2008 02:19

plastic? this thing is gonna get all scratchy. 199 is asscheap for a phone. part of the "allure" of the iphone was its price. Everyone wanted one ...created the hype ..but few could afford ...now everyone will get this cheap shit ... and apple will shoot theirselves in the foot.

Personally ..id prefer it being bulletproof like the first one ..instead of thefirst time dropping it the screen shatters and the plastic is in shambles.

the people that will buy this cheap shit are the same people that flock in droves to walmart to buy vizio plasma and lcd tv's and claiming they are as good as pioneers.

I saw the comment about plastic and no replaceable battery ... great point ... watch all the walmarterites suck up this crap ohhhh we have an apple iphone.

lastly ..wonder if i can just pull the metal back off of one someone throws away and put it on the plastic one instead.

any phone without the windows mobile or a memory card slot is shit. Thus iPhone is pure shit. I got a HTC 8525, and it's better than the damn iPhone and cost around 200.

227.7.2008 14:07

I am a little pissed off. I just call ATT and they told me that I am not eligible for the $299 US (16Gb) iphone and it will cost me about $799 if I want to get the new one. Check that out because I was assuming that I could purchase the 16GB for $299 and was ready to do so. Steve Jobs at the developer conference was touting(spelling)the $199 and $299 price as a big selling point. I can't believe AT&T is doing this. Once people realize this fact I bet many many people will be very pissed off like I am.
