Weekend iPad sales: 700,000

Weekend iPad sales: 700,000 CNNMoney is reporting today that Apple has outsold even the most radical predictions for the iPad, selling 700,000 units during its launch weekend.
The estimates come from Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, an analyst who specializes in Apple products.

Reads the article: In a report to clients issued Saturday night, Munster's estimated that by midnight Sunday, Apple will have sold 600,000 to 700,000 iPads, including pre-orders — more than double his relatively conservative pre-launch estimate of 200,000 to 300,000. (Other analysts had published estimates of 300,000 to 400,000.)

When the original iPhone began sales in 2007, Apple took 74 days to hit 1 million sales. The latest iteration however, the iPhone 3GS took 3 days to hit the same milestone.

I got a netbook last Black Friday. Let's compare...

 -------------------------------------------------
| | Netbook | iPad |
|-------------+-------------------+----------------|
| Price | $185 | $500 |
| CPU | 1.6GHz Intel Atom | 1GHz Apple A4 |
| Memory | 1 GB | 256 MB |
| Storage | 160 GB HDD | 16 GB SSD |
| Screen Res. | 1024x600 | 1024x768 |
| Camera | Built in webcam | None |
| OS | Windows XP Home | iPhone OS |
| Wifi | b/g/n | a/b/g/n |
 -------------------------------------------------

Gosh those extra few pixels of screen real estate are awful tempting. Pity I'd want to do more with them than play with my calendar and watch YouTube.

I wish I had the money to blow that those hundreds of thousands of people did though. I could do some pretty nifty things with the extra $315 that I didn't spend on an (even more) overpriced iPhone.

Sorry if there are any iFans around - I don't hate you - I just can't understand what the heck is going through your head when you buy these things!

I agree with you 100%. Even if you compare what a $500 laptop would buy you today. Probably 4GB of memory, HDMI, WebCam and 250GB of storage.
I dunno, I guess if your you are so insecure or rich that you need to impress other insecure or rich people, iPad like iPhone must be helping them cry out "Look at me...Please...Look".
I dunno.

I agree with nonoitall, this is what i been telling everyone (friends and family), and yet there is still 700,000 stupid ppl would buy this crap over a laptop that is cheaper and can do so much more. Also, if i ever wanted a ipad, i would consider to get an update version in the future after what, couple months? just look at Iphone, it took them less than 6 month to come out with 3Gs after 3G. They just like to screw their customer, want everyone to update to the latest tech, same goes with Microsoft.

You guys forget the iPad is touchscreen, that is where most of the appeal comes from.

that being said , do you think the lack of an HDD, a webcam ,various standard netbook ports, AND flash (and many more diasadvantages i cant think of atm) all justify getting this oversized touch capable ipod over a normal netbook for a 500$ premium instead of a ~150$ average netbook?

probably a retorical question cause reading between the lines in your articles about the ipad suggest you dont support it either
