Microsoft scraps plan for Courier tablet

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 30 Apr 2010 11:21 User comments (13)

Microsoft scraps plan for Courier tablet Gizmodo, the site that first uncovered Microsof'ts plans to release a "digital journal" dubbed the Courier, is reporting this week that the company has scrapped those plans.
Execs were told by CEO Steve Ballmer that the tablet would no longer be supported, which seems reasonable given that the Courier was never publicly acknowledged as an upcoming device.

In the videos released by Gizmodo and then Engadget, the Courier seemed to be in its final stages of development, but it appears, at least from an outsider's view, that Ballmer does not want to directly compete with the iPad, and eventually the HP Slate or Dell Streak.

Adds Microsoft Corporate VP of Communications Frank Shaw: "At any given time, we're looking at new ideas, investigating, testing, incubating them. It's in our DNA to develop new form factors and natural user interfaces to foster productivity and creativity. The Courier project is an example of this type of effort. It will be evaluated for use in future offerings, but we have no plans to build such a device at this time."

The device would have been under an inch thick, weigh about 1.3 pounds, and be 5x7 when closed. The device was built on the Tegra 2 chip, and ran on Windows CE 6/Windows Phone 7.

Yeah typical. I have no interest in an iPad but would have considered the Courier. I don't know why they say they aren't interested in competing with similar technologies. They build keyboards, they make mouses and lots of other competing technologies.

There will be other fully open options on the market soon .. open and cheaper.

don't understand.. both are M$ customers.. Them who can't think (brain dead) and them who don't think (woolly and in a crowd)

You sad people.. didn't you ever work out that IF this thing had ever hit the market it would have run something similar to "windows mobile" drm riddled restricted crap.. exactly cloned in "separate you from your cash" philosophy as any drm riddled lump of crapple junk??

They have seen the ipad (still think that's a female hygiene product btw) slump off rapidly after even the fanboys realised it's a turkey they bought (a turkey is for life.. an apple turkey is anyway) and thought maybe .. just maybe releasing a "competing" restricted heap of crap isn't exactly a great idea?

Buy a netbook morons.. for as little as £99.. get a proper mini pc for your money with a bloody keyboard and full function instead of an overblown phone.

MS got cold feet.
They were afraid of losing to Apple.

Innovation should be made of sterner stuff.

We don't want an underpowered netbook though. We want a Tablet machine with an innovative OS and feel. A two touch screen tablet that was an ACTUAL notebook would have been pretty neat. Also, touch screens, WE WANT TOUCH, hence why we desire a tablet. You're in the wrong topic bub. And It would have been on mobile OS7. A VAST improvement. And that os would only be the back runner. The UI would have been VERY different. The same way HTC has taken windows 6.5 and made it their own. Sure it runs windows, but the UI vastly improves it to the point where you would not think it was windows mobile.

I would much rather invest in this, I don't think I'd ever buy an Ipad because I don't have any uses for it.
