Facebook warns users of new hoax

Facebook warns users of new hoax Facebook and security firm Sophos have warned visitors of a new hoax affecting millions of Facebook users.
The scam, which is a message that purports Facebook may begin charging a '$10 Gold Membership' if you don't forward the message before midnight, has been sent to million of users duped into sharing it with their friends.

Says Sophos:

It’s amazing what people will believe when they are sent a message from a trusted friend - but let me assure you, Facebook is *not* going to ask you for your payment when you sign onto the site tomorrow morning. And no, the announcement of Facebook beginning to charge its users has *not* been on the news.

As I explained at the end of last week, these claims are complete and utter poppycock. If a friend of yours forwards you the message, admonish them for spreading a chain letter and suggest they inform all of their friends that they were mistaken.

The message concludes with: "IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT," you will not be charged in the future.

I cannot fathom why anyone would go on facebook...but hey, if they want to waste their time with that crap, they might as well waste their time with chain letters as well.

I'm sure if the Facebook people ever looked at our comments they'd think the same thing.

I reposted this as well as the other ridiculous incarnation about bombs in your house and such. I felt like annoying people yesterday and making them paranoid. Usually I am the first to debunk these rumors among my family.

You don't have to be a moron to use Facebook or at least I hope that is true.

I use facebook to keep track of old friends I don't want to put into my email contact list and relitives. Closer friends and relities are in my contact list. If they were one step further away and I wouldn't want to contact them at all. I go of FB a few times a month, sometimes not even that often.

For that it is great!

Why do people believe this kind of nonsense? Simple! Because the majority of the human race has been so desensitized by things like the news that whatever they see somewhere (especially on tv or the internet) it certainly MUST be true! It's like Y2K all over again. One person says something and everyone just believes it. Dumb asses.
