Xbox Next will use Blu-ray, not play used games

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 27 Jan 2012 12:15 User comments (42)

Xbox Next will use Blu-ray, not play used games According to Kotaku, Microsoft's upcoming console will play Blu-ray discs, catching up to Sony 7 years after the launch of the PS3.
Another part of the report that will certainly be notable if true, is the notion that Microsoft will "incorporate some sort of anti-used game system" in the new console. It is unclear how this system would work, but it will likely not be foolproof, regardless.

Additionally, Microsoft is likely to launch the console with the Kinect 2 motion control system including a built-in processor. The processor would allow the Kinect to process motions more accurately and smoother.

Microsoft would only say this: "As an innovator we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that we don't comment on rumors or speculation."

Earlier in the week, reports surfaced that the "Xbox Next" will use a Radeon 6750 GPU, which would make the console 6 times more powerful than the Xbox 360.

Then I'm not getting til it's hacked.

anti-used game wow...

Microsoft still doesn't seem to understand the concept of first-sale rights...

As always, take these rumors with a cargo ship of salt. Just a few months ago they were saying that the next Xbox would run an ARM processor.

if this is true about used games then i will never buy one. Thats the most absurd thing i have ever heard

Why you already need activation key's for a number of games before you go online,it's the only way it can be implemented apart from moving to 100% digital download, which would create a massive drop in physical media sales, meh there's a crack for everything

Well this is a step in the right direction if there goal is to make true the forum post about consoles being dead in the next 10 years... So if ur console breaks or you upgrade to a newer one all your games wouldn't work??

(@ Johnstarr) Not really. Serials and codes tied to you Xb account would be sufficient. once transferred to another console you should be able to play. Just like with the games now that have dlc that is tied to you account. Once logged out of that account the DLC does not work on that console.

(@ the stubborn folks against advancement of the video game age) As far as never buying if they go that route... I'll just say this. I play online with friends 95% of the time. I have 2 years on my xblive family account and I buy games new. I have had a modded 360 and when I was broke and jobless it was a nice relief not to have to buy games. I found that I played all the titles a total of 5 mins and still went back to the one or 2 games I liked. When my console got banned I had to wait until I got a job and money to buy another system. Then I had no time to play all the modded titles so I stuck to games that were important to me. The cost of my entertainment totals around $120 to $180 a year. That is relatively cheap seeing that I would spend double that at the bar or a club in one night.
Tech is changing and you can't stop it. And who cares if you ain't buying. Somebody else will!! Stop whining and buy your games. You can't play them all and if you are then you need to be getting paid to do so.

If there is any truth to the whole "no used games" thing Microsoft will probably test it out, see that it sucks, then do an update to get rid of it.

1127.1.2012 09:33

It's laughable to think they would go ahead with no used games. They may want it, but they have to know that won't work unless they only want to sell a small fraction of what they sold before in console sales.

1227.1.2012 10:20

The Xbox360 is hugely successful despite used games and modded consoles. Don't mess with success too much. . .

1327.1.2012 11:21

It should be noted that MS has not confirmed that it will not play used games. So my guess is MS started this rumor out to see public reaction. So far negative feedback on the idea has been slammed on other sites, so my guess is MS will pull away from this idea.

1427.1.2012 11:40

There is no way MS would allow this. Come on. I knew I would see this here on ADF. Internet gossip gets around worse than a sewing circle. I would never buy a console if this were true and MS knows this.

1527.1.2012 11:43

Well we know it will use blu ray and a 6XXX radeon at least.

1627.1.2012 12:10

If the rumor about used games is true I hope there is plenty of lubrication handy so they can stick the new xbox up their ass.

I get that with my 5870 ALL THE TIME. I gave up trying to update the driver. I can play my game for 5 min and whammo! My comp crashes. If I keep the original drivers installed I dont get that problem so that's what I do. I will def be going nvidia next time.

I have no trouble with my uncles ATI rig or my ati based notebook but I have random crashes with my nivida rig, it seems to hate running videos every now and then it will shutdown the video card then lock up. I think it has more to do with mobo configs than pure video card based.

Also have you tried http://www.omegadrivers.net/ .

Don't count with me.

my feelings exactly, i might go with sony next if thats the case!!

2227.1.2012 15:37

What most companies do is through back channels is put out and idea which might not seem to popular releasing information as a rumor. not allowing for used games would make the company alot more money as long as they dont loose to many users...

Microsoft said they wont comment on rumors im guessing because they want to see how well the public would take to having to buy new games. The response by the public will be echoing disappointment so Microsoft wont move forward with the no used games feature.

2327.1.2012 16:35

If it has bluray, ps3 would lose its biggest advantage over the other systems.

It's ok i know how to get it to work,in a nutshell i have to put my hd2400 back in use the hotfix so ccc can detect the hardware or it will bsod, then remove the card & place the 6670 in it's place & install new driver for that card, frak'n unbelievable there are posts all over the place with people having the same issue through out the range of ATi cards,it's incredible ATi don't automatically supply the hotfix on the install of the software

@ dab0ne
to get driver to install if it bsod's,you extract contents of ccc or just get the driver download & extract it,then use device manager & select graphic adapter or whatever & hit update driver, then manually browse to the extracted driver folder = support then hit update it should install fine

Well, apparently the PS3's biggest advantage is now being able to play used games...haha.

Surprised no one here has mentioned this, but.... Not sure how they would implement a no used games feature, but I am assuming that would also kill rentals for video games.

If you getting that kind of reaction you likely have a mid-tower PC and the card itself is over-heating. If you not running LCS, then you need to open up the side panel and stick a floor fan beside it, then your card will cool down enough not to crash.

It's what I did for my PC for now, since I can't order LCS parts for my tri-fire 5870s. And that works just fine.

Will this kill game rentals as well? Gamefly? Redbox? interesting if this is so, most people will not buy a game they can play through in a few hours for $60.00 no matter how much fun they may be.

2927.1.2012 18:39

the efforts are pointless

What if you have more one xbox in your house? I thought Batman Arkham City handled it well, excluding the catwoman. The responsibility should be on the maker of the game if they don't want to kill the second hand market.

3127.1.2012 18:53

My guess is that this "anti-used game policy," if accurate, will be like EA's online pass thing, where if you buy a used game you have to buy a new activation code for $10 or whatever it is.

3228.1.2012 12:09

I will guess that the used game issue will more likely be a ripped disc and they will use cinavia

3328.1.2012 14:17

Meh it's all irrelevant till it comes from the horses mouth, personally i treat any reports of this nature with the contempt they deserve, honestly using a graphic card that's outdated..wtf.. did they do the same with the 360 ?,regardless if the console is restricted to a hdd under 2tb or limit an external size, can't natively play all vid formats without a hack, can't run xbmc then they can shove it right back you know where,ok i just threw that xbmc in there since i was on a roll :p

Leave it to Micro$oft to find a way to make more money and be more greedy :P

3529.1.2012 01:31

Microsoft is just testing the waters. That "used game policy will never fly"

3629.1.2012 01:46

goodbye gamestop.

3729.1.2012 07:42

I still have my original Xbox now the XB360, there still original xbox games that don't play on XB360.

3829.1.2012 08:50

If EA can do it why not Microshaft? EA charges you 10 bucks + whatever you payed used...they claim its for a license to use the program which is non-transferable(unless stated otherwise by the owner)

The First Sale Doctrine doesn't cover licensing rights such as CD keys or access codes.

its a shame, but i see it happening.

3929.1.2012 21:23

Whelp, just the rumor of tracking and denying used games is enough to keep me away from the system. Until this has been 100% dispelled AFTER launch, I'm 100% not touching the pile.
And it's going to ship with an obsolete video card that Intel will have better capabilities built into it's CPUs? Wow, what idiots. Sounds like I'm going to be sitting out the next generation of consoles.

4030.1.2012 16:40

"Used games"?????????????

How would it know if you put in a disc that is "used"???

AKA, always on DRM. "This disc is marked as do not play. Please sign into your XBL account and provide serial number and proper authorization in order to receive authorization of decryption key."

Are you surprised from a company who's been pushing for software as a service for more than a decade? They don't want you use use Windows or Office without paying a monthly subscription fee, why would they want you playing GTA6 w/o one?
And who's going to provide the competition so they can't get away with this in a free market? $ony? They'll (have?) meet with M$ behind closed doors and agree to do the same thing with their system. Any other competitor will be financially assaulted if they attempt to enter the console market.

P.S. You let Steam and WoW in. The new trend is "Facebook 'micro' transaction" games. These guys see this happen, and know they can get away with it.
