HBO once again shoots down potential Netflix partnership

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 25 Jul 2012 12:06 User comments (15)

HBO once again shoots down potential Netflix partnership Within the company's earnings report this afternoon, Netflix CEO Reed Hasting teased that the company could eventually partner with HBO for its fantastic original content.
Unfortunately for fans of Netflix and HBO, the cable television network has shot down the possibility, just like it did in the past.

Says HBO: "We are not in discussions and have no plans to work with Netflix."

The blunt response is unsurprising given the fact that Hastings has often called HBO its main competitor. Earlier this year, HBO would not sell its DVDs to Netflix at wholesale prices, forcing them to buy box sets like True Blood and Boardwalk Empire at full price to offer them to their subscribers.

In the shareholder letter, Hastings wrote: "While we compete for content and viewing time with HBO, it is also possible we will find opportunities to work together - just as we do with other networks." He later clariifed by adding: "We're just another network, and then when you have multiple networks, they often find ways of working together."

They don't want to partner with Netflix because then some people would stop paying for HBO for there cable or sat service.

Already, people get HBO for one series then drop it, or even share HBO Go logins or just find the shows for free.

I understand where HBO is coming from, but they're just going to lose this fight.

While agree with all you guys, I have HBO as a subscriber (cable) & don't even use the online GO service & barely use the on demand service. I think I catch Bill Maher & m a y b e a movie once & a great while, when I'm too lazy to get up & put a bluray/dvd in.

Literally, the content is SO limited in all of these movie houses it makes me want to vomit. If the moon were made of cheese - I wish I could type into the IMDB & then go from there to the movie. Not necessarily streamed (not really a friend of streaming), but we get the point. No running back & forth between who has the film or TV show.

What's the sense in all these search engines & technology if we're all just going to be nickel & dimed to death?

I've been saying all along. The "Problem" of "piracy" is not the cost or the stealing or whatever...
It's the service and convenience.

The "service" of downloading your own shows with tools which are widely available far exceeds the services offered piecemeal by the content companies.

"Netflix is cool, but I can't get HBO."
"HBO Go is cool, but offerings are limited."
"It's great that Hulu has my TV show, but I have to wait a week and quality sucks."

The "pirates" for lack of a better word, are able to see whatever, whenever with almost zero quality issues. THIS is what the competition is.

Pretty much, pirates are also a straw man.

What really is a pirate, someone who consumes media via non transitional means. They are really not much different than the people who do not consume media.

Go after illicit profit generation its a much more quantifiable finite thing.

Quite the contrary... I am a complete & contemptible asshole. Just ask my wife.

And my co-workers, my old soldiers, a couple of my commanding officers, a bunch of my old classmates, several of my old flames, two or three dozen individuals from these forums alone, read one of my old blogs...
