PS3 sales double in Japan According to data from Media Create, the Sony PlayStation 3 doubled its previous week sales, selling a solid 35,000 units in Japan for the week ended November 30th.
Japan continues to be dominated by Nintendo consoles however, which saw the DSi sell 87,000 units and the Wii sell 50,000 units, a 30 percent increase from the previous week.

The Sony handheld PSP sold 55,000 units. The DSi's predecessor, the DS Lite sold 26,000 units.

Bringing up the rear after a month of strong sales was the Xbox 360 with 11,000 units sold.

Chart:

* NDS (DSi + Lite) - 114 036
* PSP - 55 090
* Wii - 49 848
* PS3 - 34 978
* Xbox 360 - 11 423
* PS2 - 5 628

So... PS3 sold more than the 360 by more than 3 times this week?

So this pretty much negates all the gains that the 360 made on the ps3 back in sept. The japanese market has returned to normal.

This is a progress, right? After the price cut, I'm pretty sure that the PS3 hasn't outsold the 360 yet, until now.
And lol at 'sadly the 360 gained all that back'

The Japanese market is still non-important this gen. Microsoft is doing insanely well in Europe and all over North America. Obviously the 360 being an American product is not gonna appeal to the Japanese as much, lets not ignore that fact! And the PS3 should be doing much better than the Wii by now, and it still hasen't been that way. Sony's gonna have to look at release some more big RPG titles in the land of the rising sun (Japan), if they want to do much better.

Japan sales #'s show that the PS3 has 3x the amount sold LTD (launch to date)

PS3 - 2,400,000+

360 - 800,000+

I wonder how it will be when White Knight Chronicles release just before Christmas and just afterwards. The US definitely shows the 360 with more sold overall but the EU is showing to be tied from my understanding. It's starting to get interesting though in the World Wide Stage.

I haven't looked at console sale stats for awhile, but last I looked Ps2's were still selling well. It's at the bottom now with only 5000 sales? Is it cause everyone finally has one now or is it something else?

Also, I really don't care for the ps3 anymore. The 360 has so many more games than it (not just fps) and seems to have many more to come. Plus the price point is cheaper by a fairly significant amount.

Unfortunately, most 360 games are also ported to PC and my laptop has proven sufficient so far so I don't have reason to get either. That leaves only the gimmicky and gameless Wii which is out of stock and isn't even getting a price drop.

16 months. Not trying to start a flame war (to avoid, don't reply to this) the PS3 has been released 16 months after the 360 which obviously gives the 360 a big head start. If Microsoft were to stop producing ANYTHING for the 360 for 16 months, I'm pretty sure by then that the PS3 will have a price drop and much more games.

But obviously that won't happen so that's why 360 sells more.

The 360 isnt selling more because of the 16 month lead it is leading because of it there is a difference. Meaning the 360 is still currently selling better than the ps3 and the ps3 has had enough time to steal the market back especially with the rrod. The 360 is leading due to its headstart i will give you that but as i said there is a distinction between what you said and whats happening. In honesty the ps3 owes a majority of its sales to having the biggest brand loyalty fans out there. I have many a friend who refused to hop into the next gen because the ps3 is too expensive. they refuse to even evaluate the 360 for better or worse they just are stuck in ps2 era and wont move forward til the ps3 drops more and more. I replied and as you see it wasnt in a flamestlye way. Im stating that just to be clear i wasnt attempting to be childish but yet debate intellegently .

Good post, rare to see.
Still, if the 360 and PS3 started at the same time, the sales would be really close, the PS3 will have better firmware updates, more games and will be cheaper. The PS3's price will surely drop next year.

It really is "horses for courses" with this generation of consoles, and i think the sales figures bear that out. If you're a bit hard up and only want to game you buy a 360, if you've a bit of disposable income and want to get into HD movies and gaming you buy a PS3, and if you have kids you get a Wii.

I know its a bit of a generalization, but looking just at my group of friends and colleges, next gen ownership roughly follows the sales figure ratio, and the owners pretty much fit into the above demographics.

I'm a firm fan of the PS3, love it to bits and would have no other, but to someone who doesn't have a HD TV (or plan to upgrade) and only wants to play games (on or offline) then why pay nearly £200 more for something you can't use or don't need?

Like i started with, "horses for courses". One sales figure i'd like to see is PS3 owners vs. 360 owners who also own a stand alone BluRay player?

some points ...

1) The Japanese market is where all cutting edge technology is first tested - way before Europe and the USA basically because most of the hi-tech companies are Japanese and also the consumer demand for new gadgets - to say it is non important is strange.

2) Microsoft is not doing insanely well in Europe, if you are talking about X-box vs PS3 - they are virtually tied.

3) Anyone who thinks the Japanese will not buy an american product because it is american has obviously never been to Japan - they live , breathe and devour everything american from its products to its pop culture - be it baseball or rock music and everything in between - ever since the dropping of the atom bomb they have ( some might say perversely ) broken their own necks to be american copycats and live the same culture.

Not flaming at you but i understand the point you were trying to make but even after 16 months had passed the and if PS3 price cuts occurred the xbox360 and Wii still would be cheaper. The price of the console if affected by the release dates somewhat but the biggest factor is that your paying for newer technology. Blue-ray and the cell processor drive the price of the PS3 up so PS3 will have a hard time ever matching the 360 and Wii's price. Think i read that Wii makes $6, 360 maybe breaking even and PS3 losses money on each console sold. As a diehard sony fan since they first entered the market of gaming consoles the price is the only thing that kept me away. Not b/c i dont have it. B/c i am not willing to pay that much for a gaming console. The price of these console was set way too high in this generation of gaming consoles as a whole and that's why some people are still playing their PS2 consoles right now.

To the person who said that japan is where cutting edge technology is, i agree with the statement but then in turn say why is the console with the least cutting edge tech stomping out the ps3 in that same locatiion? SORRY about my convuluted response. It makes sense but took me a while to spit it out...

And secondly the ps3 lead in japan has LITTLE to do with it being good,better, or otherwise than the 360. They hate american products over there point blank. America is hated something fierce all over the world, its strange to see seeing how it is the most diverse place on earth but hey by me saying that i probably feed into the perception of fat arrogant american. It's much like racsim i as a white male cant begin to have a race debate with a black male because 90% of the things i would need to say can be twisted into being racist.Not to say these conversations never happen but they are very few and far between...

To the poster above who says they(japanese citizens) love american products and culture that is a very misleading statement. They like the entertainment factors of america not our technological products i.e cars,t.v's,cameras,computers...list goes on. They like our style,music,sports,movie stars. Theres a big difference in what they like over here.

Everyone should think of an opposite scenario. Let's say the PS3 came out in Nov 2005, and the 360 and Wii came out in Nov 2006; it would ALMOST be the same as for the previous generation (GC/PS2/XBOX). It would obviously have more developer support and although the 360 may have had the same amount/kind of exclusives, the PS3 could've had its original amount of exclusives (Assassin's Creed....).

Oh, and Canada is the most diverse country :P

okay, let's say i agree with what you just said, i.e. Japanese just liked the US music, sports, movies, but not cars, electronics... Well, by analogy, it's fair to say that they liked US Xbox games as well (hey, the games are based on American culture). See, that's the thing, in order to play those games, they have to get an Xbox 360 :)

maybe the PS3 sales are going up because they are making more dojinshi ghey porn games for the lousy system lol

Failed attempt to flame.
And PS3 sales are going up because of some new games.

Four words: METAL GEAR SOLID FOUR!!

Hell, i pretty much bought my PS3 for that game.

Advertising and support are partial factors for success of a console. I have been living in Japan for 8 years and the only game T.V. commercials i see are either for the PS3/PSP or Nintendo (Wii, DS, etc.).I think thats why the 360 isnt doing well here in Japan. unfortunately the 360 is not given such care and consideration as it deserves here in Japan.

The most important factor for success are the games.
Theyre pumping out games here left and right for both systems. Some are good, most are bad; theres so much variety for all genres and when theyre GOOD, theyre GOOD!!

Wii's past success is due to its novelty, but the novelty is wearing thin. No wonder theyre recycling their gamecube games.

I think the launch of PS3 was a little premature meaning that there werent enough titles to entice new gamers at the time, but its all coming together with exclusives like the resistance series, MGS4, LBPlanet, etc....

I just like to think that i bought very reasonably priced complete media center/ computer complete with blu-ray player that plays MGS4!! <- And yes, im playing the English version! Thanks region free!! Yay! Happy camper here!
