PS3 firmware 3.0 to be 'completely new system'?

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 26 Jun 2009 7:11 User comments (44)

PS3 firmware 3.0 to be 'completely new system'? According to a VG247 report, the eventual PS3 firmware 3.0 will be a "completely new system," not unlike how the NXE was for rival Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.
The report says the update could be coming as soon as the holiday season 2009 and will be a "complete overhaul."

A new reputation system will be included, one "in which users will be able to evaluate each other will be provided for… game applications. There will be a new API available to so the user can… allow users and also obtain users’ reputation.”

Also included is a "grief reporting system" which allow gamers to take screenshots during gameplay of "offensive" players. The pics can then be directly sent to Sony.

If the rumor is true, another notable upgrade will be the ability to download patches in the background during gameplay. Audiophiles in the crowd will also enjoy being able to simultaneously "output HDMI and digital optical."

As is standard PR (See: PSP Go!), Sony has called the rumors "completely untrue" and "wild speculation.”

The hell with the firmware! Where's the price cut that Sony needs to survive the console race? To me that would be more important than some firmware, IMO. Bring the price down, then people will flock to the console, and then you can focus on the firmware!!

I agree, they should bring the price down... but their online system is pretty bad though. Sony should bring the price down to below xbox 360 before microsoft releases that xbox natal, which will swamp ps3 and wii's sales

426.6.2009 23:43

Nevermind focusing on price cuts, what about the people with PS3s? What do we get? lol

I think the PS3's system could use an overhaul, just cause it never really had it's own... Just ripped from the PSP. The PS3 is far greater then a PSP though, so why run similar systems?

Price cuts = More sales = More money to upgrade online play

If you think Natal is going to swamp Wii's sales you are smoking crack. I think you and Microsoft public relations are the only ones that would say or possibly begin to think that. Nintendo has solidified their position as number one this time around, and they may have even created enough brand recognition to float through another generation. God knows Sony is only selling consoles to people holding onto the PS2 years. As a fan of previous Sony products, it's a hard thing to say, but it's the truth. Microsoft has become so ego driven due to their lead on Sony they are probably going to drop the ball the next time around as well. I am guessing both PS3s new motion and Natal will breathe little life into the respective consoles based on the late term of the cycle. Both technologies will probably see as much attention as sixaxis motion controls, or gesture controls for a mortal kombat game on Wii. If you can turn it off, it probably will be turned off.

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, mate. Why would anybody buy a wii over natal if xbox+natal: has more games, has better graphics, better motion sensing, is cheaper and better online gameplay. If you think that wii will outsell xbox 360 when natal is release, then indeed you are the one "smoking crack".

I see both the proposed reporting and reputation systems causing far more harm than good if they are indeed in said patch. And I really wouldn't call the holiday season soon.

It's just another way for sony to copy the xbox 360, xbox live has had that feature for a long time. Sony has stolen basically everything from nintendo and ms (online, guide button, this firmware update (if it goes ahead) is a copy off NXE, browser, wii's built in wifi, and the list goes on).

OMZGGG, Did sony really do that...On Behalf Of Sony I apologize.
Now can you be a gentlemen and apologize for the following things microsoft has "copied"

- GUI
- The Ablity To Use A mouse and keyboard in its operating system
- The Ability To Use A Monitor in its operating system
- xerox's operating system
- The Ability To Update The OS or compents
- I Dont know if this counts because you have to pay $100 for it, but the external wifi usb plug in for the xbox 360 (since Nintendo Inovated the world with wi-fi, anyone else that uses it is copying)
- The natal(some of may know it as eye toy 2.0)
- ohh and Basicly anything from mac osx (Gadgets?..nice try MS)

the list goessss onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Microsoft even copied the Control Panel name from Apple lmao

They changed it to Preferences in OS X, and now that a whole bunch of other things are being copied who knows what will be changed.

I think that those same kids that should be reported are the same ones that are going to abuse the reporting system, by flooding the system with things like ZOMG NO WAI CAN HE SHOT ME SO KWIK AIMBOT HAXOR. Or OMG UR SUCH A JERK IM GUNNA RAPPORT U LOL. I've had to deal with these little annoying buggers all the time, and if they make the reporting system that quick and simple they're going to be on it like white on rice.

And as for the reputation system by the way they make it sound I don't even need to explain how quickly thats going to get abused. Mark my words, if that happens we're going to see threads for reputation trading all over the console forums and people making side accounts just to one up their main account.

Except that industry analysts and other experts think Natal is too limited (can only track more general movements, not very precise ones that most hardcore gamers would want) AND could cost up to $150+ just for the extra hardware. Even the 'demo' shown wasn't realtime and they had no estimate at all when it would be available (if?).

So if before Natal is the needed time frame, Sony still has 1-2 years to do a price cut. :-)

MS copiued Amiga OS, not the MAC as a lot of apple users love to believe.

MAC OS at the time was pretty bad, where as Amiga OS has most of the stuff that's only just coming out now in the current OSes released.

im a ps3 fanboy, but i gotta say sony has just been falling short lately. starting really with playstation home. 4 or so months after it was supposed to be released its running beta, and hasn't changed much in the past few months but for a few more places to hang(game supported rooms)and all most cared to see, was the video playback off your own home tv, so others could watch the movies you had on you hard drive, seemed to be the only cool thing about PSH. but they still have nothing but empty sections in the stores. apart from the clothes and furniture you have to BUY! so they start with that, and then make all these promises for e3. and really...... besides the go! we didn't see anything that interesting. a few titles here and there, but nothing AMAZING like they claimed.

i just hate how sony toots there own horn, and talks us up with all these plans and projects and if they even release something, its always WAY!!! down the road.

respect Microsoft for not claiming sh*# before e3 and coming out with nearly as much content!

not saying im about to go buy a 360, cause i love the ps3 for its multimedia options. and can settle with the games for now.

just saying sony, stop talking and start walking!

How is stating a list of what ms supposedly copied on computer software relevant to a gaming discussion? Name 5 things that xbox 360 has copied from another console. Also, you're calling for me to be a "gentleman" when you're referring to me as a "troll", you are so awesome calling people names online! Sony is introducing the reporting feature to stop people like you from polluting the network.

3028.6.2009 06:02

This whole thread has a strong stink of troll in it - skanky old troll baked in the midday sun at 45 degrees for a week or more.
It's always the same anytime the words "console" "sony" "microsoft" and "nintendo" are used in a thread.
Little boys / trolls crawl out of their darkened bedrooms / caves and throw their toys / clubs about to defend the beloved toy of their choice.
Advocating a competitor's toy in front of them is a dangerous business and is usually met with blanket denial, snarling teeth , profanities and spurious claims and assertions about said advocate's sexuality. All of this to protect their insecurity from the possibility that something they don't own is equally good ( or God forbid - better ) and that they or their mummy and daddy , might have made the wrong choice.
There is only choice in their minds - and that is the choice that they or their daddy made , anything else is a mistake and is to be despised , aggessively attacked and then destroyed if possible in order to massage and soothe their trembling egos.

I would love to have this ability in my PS3 because i get tired and bored easily when i have to wait hours on end for a update upgrade to finish downloading and installing then i can start playing.

As long as it doesn't create some sort of drm program for the ps3 i don't have any problems.

First off, the 360 doesn't copy features, Microsoft the company does. Secondly they don't copy it and neither does Sony, they borrow ideas from other companies and improve on them. Every company has practically taken something from someone else. It's called competition.

So what has Microsoft brought over to their console?

-Natal (Eye Toy with depth sensing)
-Avatars (Nintendo Mii's, I'm sure Mii's were copied from something else)
-Lips (Singstar, it's exclusive to the 360, so it counts)
-Games on Demand (Steam, PSN to a much lesser extent...., nothing new... go to Steam for downloadable games)

I think I've proved my point. Sony has "copied" features from both the 360 and the Wii and the same goes for Nintendo. It's all competition, unless you love one company so much that you'd love to see their monopolistic prices.

I also EXTREMELY HATE the damn d-pad! WTF!!! Why did they have to make it all stupid, like I press left and it goes down or up and it goes left, sh!t. This is something I wish they copied Sony on, individual d-pad keys. I never though I could hate something so much...

I was referring to the xbox 360 itself, not ms. People who work on vista don't work on the xbox 360, it's a completely different branch, hence the reason why I said 360, if I said ms people would have responded the same way they did before.

Really, lips a copy off singstar? I think it's more like karaoke to be honest. Btw that's only four, not five, I'm suprised you didn't mention the lb rb aswell.

Well, that's like saying Microsoft has nothing to do with the marketing, hardware or software choices made for the 360 or any of their products for that matter. They have/had branches such as Ensemble Studios or now 3DV that made software or hardware specifically for their devices, and they had cooperation in the choices made during development. Just because they're a different branch doesn't mean that they are 100% independent...

And last time I checked, Lips and Singstar could both be considered karaoke. Their interfaces are exactly the same minus a few minor differences. I also said I made my point... woop-dee-doo that I only included four... the reason I didn't mention the LB and RB buttons are because Sony decided to make their R2 and L2 buttons triggers. They go hand-in-hand.
