Zuckerberg and Gates want Internet for all by 2020

Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates have both pledged to help bring Internet to everyone on the planet by 2020.
"When people have access to the tools and knowledge of the Internet, they have access to opportunities that make life better for all of us," reads the declaration. "The Internet belongs to everyone. It should be accessible by everyone."

The declaration was made at the UN this week, as part of a larger pledge by the United Nations to get everyone out of poverty by 2030.

"The Internet is more than just a network of machines; it is the key driver of social and economic progress in our time," Zuckerberg added. "A 'like' or a post won't stop a tank or a bullet, but when people are connected, we have the chance to build a common global community with a shared understanding -- and that's a powerful force," he said.

By giving Internet access to all, Zuckerberg estimated that affordable education could be brought to 600 million children who would otherwise grow up without education.

So far, the UN says $25 billion has been pledged by the U.S., Canada and other nations although the UN has estimated it will cost over $5 trillion to make its goals a reality.

I ask you all...who really gives a shit about whether or not internet is accessible to third-world countries with tons of poor people that don't even have TVs, or running water. Not diminishing those countries or dissing them but let THEM provide themselves internet first and foremost.

Doesn't everybody in the absolute bulk of the populated world have net access if they actually want it???

And no one person or even corporation in this world is valued at 5 trillion so if the UN is right, Zuckerberg's nonsense is futile. Frankly, this punky lucky-in-life dork should stick with his discombobbled Facebook.

Translation.

If you live in America, have a job and earn a living, be prepared to further subsidize those who do not!

I for one am glad to see people that have worked hard or got lucky and made a large sum of money put it to helping others. I find it inspiring. It is there money let them choose what cause to champion. If our government wants to spend our taxes, then by all means vote on a candidate that will match your beliefs.

I also have no issues with you posting your thought online just felt we needed another view on the matter.

If the Internet is free for all then why not get all those who charge different price's to access it come together and charge a flat fee for all.

The UN is stupid to make such a statement, most 3rd world countries are content in there ability to whore themselves out and beg for billions of dollars in aid that go straight to the local warlords coffers.

Why work to build your country into power to be respected when the good old USA is around to give you everything for free.

its not like the United States is an example of one of the youngest super powers in the world, everybody knows our forefathers just sat on there asses all day begging the British to give them free stuff.

I have no issue's helping a fellow man fallen on hard times, the problem is our dumb-ass government policies regarding the use of assistance programs.

WiC and Food Stamps are major offenders, rewarding care free and reckless individuals with free stuff with no oversight is just stupid.
