Nvidia promises Tegra 4i chip with built-in LTE modem for next year

Nvidia promises Tegra 4i chip with built-in LTE modem for next year Nvidia confirmed that its Tegra 4 SoC has not fared particularly well, reporting that overall Tegra revenue fell 54 percent, year-over-year.
The processor is in the new Microsoft Surface 2 and is also in many automotive systems, but as far as Android devices go, Tegra lost whatever share it had to Qualcomm and its Snapdragon processors. Nearly every major company uses a Snapdragon 600 or 800 in its flagships, including LG, Sony, Google and HTC.

CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has now moved up the timetable for its upcoming Tegra 4i, which has a built-in LTE modem and will be the first of the company's chips to be able to compete with Qualcomm.

The new chip will begin shipping in the Q2 2014 at the latest, says the exec, with a full unveiling likely for CES in January. Huang says AT&T has already certified use of the 4i, so there is the possibility the company could make a return to the smartphone Android market.

Huang also confirmed that as production of the Tegra 4i takes place, the company will look to larger tablets and all-in-ones for the existing Tegra 4 chips.
