Written by Matti Robinson @ 19 Sep 2017 3:03

Amazon has a new Fire HD tablet for $150 Amazon has unveiled a refreshed version of its Fire HD 10 tablet. The online retailers improved 10-inch tablet has got more storage and performance but a reduced price tag.

The new Fire HD 10 retails starting at $149.99 and includes doubled storage capacity. Not only is the storage increased to 32 gigabytes but there's a new MediaTek octa-core processor that is said to improve performance up to 30 percent.

Just the price drop of 35 percent is a significant improvement on value. Add in the improved performance and storage and you've got a pretty good deal. Fire HD 10 features a 10.1 inch Full HD display, 2 gigabytes of RAM, two cameras (VGA front-facing, 2MP rear-facing), 3.5 mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, and a microSD slot for expandable memory up to 256 gigabytes.

However, one has to remember that Fire HD 10 is not a full-fledged Android tablet but for Amazon customers, and especially Prime members, it is certainly worth a look.

The new versio can already be preordered on Amazon but it'll be released on October 11. There's also a 64GB model for $189.99. Both are available in black, blue, and red.

Piriform: CCleaner malware disaster was caused by a hacker

Written by Petteri Pyyny @ 19 Sep 2017 5:22

Piriform: CCleaner malware disaster was caused by a hacker It was revealed recently that super-popular computer cleaning software CCleaner included malware with its official distribution package. Now, the details of this disaster have been unfolded.

In Reuters article the author company behind the CCleaner, British Piriform, tells about the incident. According to them, a hacker had breached their systems sometime back in August and gained access to resources that allowed hacker to inject malicious code to the official distribution package, while still having the official CCleaner security certificate attached to the package.

Malware was distributed with CCleaner version v5.33 that was released in August. According to Piriform, more than 2 million users had downloaded that specific version and were therefor breached.

Malware itself only worked in 32-bit Windows versions and required administrator right in order to run properly. It collected information about the victim's computer, victim's installed software and files. According to Piriform, malware had elements to download more software and install them, but those elements weren't initiated by the malware before its detection.

Written by Petteri Pyyny @ 18 Sep 2017 9:29

Official CCleaner distributed malware with its installer Super popular PC cleaning program CCleaner received a serious blow to its reputation as it was found that the software's orfficial installer distributed malware.

The malware-infected CCleaner had a version number v5.33. Luckily though, the malware only affected 32-bit Windows systems and required administrator rights for the user before installing itself to the PC.

CCleaner's author, Piriform, is owned by security company Avast, making the finding even more embarrassing. Piriform now instructs its users to uninstall the software and to download the newer, clean version of the software. Clean versions have version number v5.34 or higher.

Malware was found by Cisco's security company Telos.

Chrome will tackle annoying autoplay videos on websites

Written by James Delahunty @ 18 Sep 2017 12:34

Chrome will tackle annoying autoplay videos on websites Google Chrome will soon tackle annoying autoplay videos on websites with new browser features coming next year.

Autoplay videos can be extremely annoying when browsing the web. You load a webpage to read an article, and suddenly it is there in your face; an unrelated video that is playing full blast in your browser window. For laptop users, this is particularly frustrating.

Chrome developers have heard the complaints and will roll out new features in the browser across Desktop and Mobile that will tackle the problem. The browser won't allow autoplay videos that play sound, unless the user has "indicated an interest in the media."

Users will be able to mute specific websites permanently in Chrome 63 too, according to Mounir Lamouri.

On Mobile, if you have added a website to your Home screen, then autoplay videos will be fully allowed by the browser. On Desktop, autoplay will be allowed for websites you typically watch a lot of media content on.

WATCH: SpaceX shows how not to land a rocket booster

Written by James Delahunty @ 18 Sep 2017 12:21

WATCH: SpaceX shows how not to land a rocket booster SpaceX shared an amazing video this week that can only be described as an official blooper reel for its Falcon 9 landing attempts.

The rocket firm routinely lands the booster (first stage) of the Falcon 9 rocket after it is separated during flight. SpaceX will attempt a landing except in cases where the payload is too heavy to leave enough fuel for the burns required for re-entry and landing.

It wasn't a success from day one however. Before SpaceX made landing an orbital rocket booster a routine operation, it witnessed its boosters explode ("rapid unscheduled disassembly!") and violently crash to the Earth for one reason or another. With each failure, the rocket firm gained valuable information to help to fine-tune the landing process.

While it probably was frustrating for SpaceX employees each time something went wrong, it has led to one spectacular video showing all the ways SpaceX recommends that you don't try to land a rocket booster!

Have a look at what they came up with!

The script uses all of the excess CPU power of user's computer, making the use of even the browser a struggle. According to the company behind the script, Coinhive JavaScript Miner, the script shouldn't be initiated without user consent. However, according to Neowin, The Pirate Bay does exactly that.

Best way to avoid the situation is to use other torrent sites or to block the script by using NoScript browser extension.

Elon Musk: Tesla Semi, 'beast', to be unveiled next month

Written by Matti Robinson @ 15 Sep 2017 1:16

Elon Musk: Tesla Semi, 'beast', to be unveiled next month Tesla has been one of the fastest growing (large) companies in the past couple years. In just few years the market cap has increased ten fold and it has become one of the largest car manufacturers on the planet.

It has surpassed Ford and GM to become the largest US car manufacturer in valuation. And Model 3, the inexpensive electric sedan, hasn't really been launched to the public yet.

However, Tesla and Elon Musk are not ready to rest on their laurels. The next step will be to revolutionize other aspects of motor traffic.

The next press conference will be focusing on semi-trucks. Tesla's next big product is a semi-truck, and although details are still scarce, it is fairly safe to say that it'll be an all electric vehicle with autonomous driving properties. It is also fairly safe to say that if this launch is successful it would revolutionize all cargo traffic in the United States.

Earlier this week Elon Musk tweeted saying that the unveiling of this semi-truck will happen tentatively on October 26th. Musk calls the vehicle a "beast" and says it is "unreal."

Some analysts have suggested that the product would ship in 2020 and would cost $100,000 with likely extra charges for replacement batteries.

Court: Fan-made subtitles are illegal

Written by Petteri Pyyny @ 15 Sep 2017 8:14

Court: Fan-made subtitles are illegal In Sweden, a long-running court case against local subtitle download site has finally finished. Court decided that distributing subtitles to movies and TV series, even when the subtitles have been made by fans for free, is in deed, illegal.

Case was brought against Undertexter.se back in 2013 when police seized site's servers and case was filed against the site's owner Eugen Archy for breaking the copyright legislation.

Court had to decide on a case where the subtitles the site distributed, weren't actually ripped from the original DVDs, but rather, made by fans of the movie / TV series. Defendant claimed that the artwork called "movie" consisted just the audio and video tracks, but court didn't accept that. Court found that converting the audio track to written form, even when translated, still carried original movie's copyrights. Thus, distributing such material, breached the copyrights of the movie studio.

Archy has to pay 217'000SEK (about $28'000 or €22'800) in damages to the copyright holders.

Apple quietly raises some iPad prices

Written by James Delahunty @ 13 Sep 2017 10:50

Apple quietly raises some iPad prices On the heels of yesterday's reveal of new iPhones, a new Apple TV 4K and Watch Series 3, Apple has quietly raised the prices of some of its iPads.

Without any announcement, Apple raised the priced of iPad Pro models by $50. A 10.5-inch iPad Pro now costs $799 with 256GB storage, and $999 with 512GB of storage. The largest iPad Pro models, at 12.9-inch, now cost $949 with 256GB of storage, and $1149 with 512GB of storage.

The entry level iPad Pro models with 64GB of storage are unaffected.

According to 9to5Mac, the cost increases are likely due to the rising cost of NAND flash storage, due to overwhelming demand for more solid-state storage in devices. Ironically, Apple itself has been pushing up the cost of NAND while sourcing storage for its new iPhone 8 and iPhone 10 models.

Tesla Autopilot shares blame in fatal crash, says NTSB

Written by James Delahunty @ 13 Sep 2017 10:49

Tesla Autopilot shares blame in fatal crash, says NTSB The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the United States finds that Tesla's Autopilot system was partly to blame for a fatal accident in 2016.

40 year old Joshua Brown lost his life in May 2016, when his Tesla vehicle collided with a truck. The driver of the truck was unhurt in the incident. Mr Brown was utilizing the autopilot system available in Tesla vehicles at the time of the collission, prompting the NTSB to probe its potential role in the incident.

Following an investigation, the NTSB concluded that the system was partly to blame because it allowed drivers to use Autopilot in an environment it wasn't designed to perform in.

"In this crash, Tesla's system worked as designed, but it was designed to perform limited tasks in a limited range of environments," Christopher Hart, NTSB member, said.

"Tesla allowed the driver to use the system outside of the environment for which it was designed, and the system gave far more leeway to the driver to divert his attention to something other than driving."

Previous reports that Mr Brown was watching a Harry Potter film at the time of the collission were dismissed, and the NTSB revealed that neither Mr Brown, or the truck driver, were under the influenc of drugs or alcohol, nor were they fatigued, at the time of the crash.

Apple reveals high-spec iPhone X

Written by James Delahunty @ 12 Sep 2017 2:56

Apple reveals high-spec iPhone X Apple has unveiled the hotly-anticipated iPhone X at a press event at the Steve Jobs Theater, sporting a radical redesign for the iPhone brand.

With the absence of the ever-present Home button and Bezel, the new device celebrating the 10th anniversary of iPhone certainly looks different. With a gorgeous 5-8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display (1,125 x 2,436, 458ppi) and glass back-plate, the device certainly stands out from the crowd for aesthetics. The new Super Retina display supports HDR and True Tone.

Because there is no Home button, a gesture (swipe up from bottom) instead is used to return to the Home screen from any app. A larger side button can be used for a variety of things, such as summoning Siri. You can also summon Siri with voice command as before.

The feature change prompting the most buzz is the inclusion of Face ID facial recognition technology, which is yet unproven for mass deployment in smartphones, especially when compared to the success of Touch ID (deployed since iPhone 5S) and similar fingerprinting scanning features. Face ID can be used as an iPhone unlock mechanism by simply looking at the phone, for iTunes purchases, for Safari Autofill, third party apps and to determine when you are looking at the screen to avoid premature dimming. It is enabled by an array of censors on the top of the iPhone screen

Apple unveils Watch Series 3 with LTE support

Written by James Delahunty @ 12 Sep 2017 1:42

Apple unveils Watch Series 3 with LTE support Apple has launched an upgraded version of its Watch device at the Steve Jobs Theater today, untethering the device from iPhone.

The firm made a big deal out of the fact that the Watch is now the number one selling watch in the world, and that it claims a 97% customer satisfaction rate. Additionally, the Watch is also the most used heart monitor in the world, and Apple wants to exploit that fact.

Above all else, the best thing about the Watch upgrade is it no longer has to be tethered to an iPhone when you are on the road. Instead, the Watch has built in LTE support, connecting directly to your cellular network. This will make Watch more attractive to those who don't want to switch smartphone OS.

For health-conscious users of Watch, Apple is making several notable software changes, including a completely redesigned workout app. The user's heart rate is now also displayed right on the watch face, and can notify you if it detects an elevated heart rate when you are not active.

Additionally, it can also detect arrhythmia, when your heart beat is not regular. Working with the FDA and Stanford researchers, Apple is also producing an "Apple Heart Study".

For music lovers, Apple Watch now links with Apple Music to stream over 40 million songs right over LTE.
