Xbox Next is code named 'Durango'

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 17 Feb 2012 10:38 User comments (14)

Xbox Next is code named 'Durango' 2013's yet un-named Xbox successor is codenamed 'Durango,' says Kotaku.
As the console develops, that will be the name used, say sources, until Microsoft comes up with a final name for the system.

The name makes sense given Microsoft's use of the codename "Natal" for the Kinect motion control system. Natal is a city in Brazil, and "Durango" is a state in Mexico, so it seems the company has a "thing" for naming their projects after areas.

Among the rumors about the Xbox successor are that the system will play Blu-ray discs, catching up to Sony 7 years after the launch of the PS3. Another is the notion that Microsoft will "incorporate some sort of anti-used game system" in the new console. It is unclear how this system would work, but it will likely not be foolproof, regardless. Additionally, Microsoft is likely to launch the console with the Kinect 2 motion control system including a built-in processor. The processor would allow the Kinect to process motions more accurately and smoother.

Finally, the console is rumored to use a touchscreen controller, just like the upcoming Wii U.

"incorporate some sort of anti-used game system"
I know this is all just speculation, but if any company wants to blacklist anything "used," it's a product I won't be buying. If this hair brained idea even was successful, it would kill off many business's that sell and rent used games, and bring closer the pay per use model that they really want. We all need to boycott anything that has this system in place should it come to fruition.
I'm sure microsoft would love this feature because when your system takes a dump, you'll also have to buy all new games as well. It's extremely hard to believe, but I wouldn't put anything past corporate america.

I guess in the future, we'll "buy" these systems just to have them in the house. When we want to play, we can swipe a credit card on their built in card reader and pay by the minute. My bad, that's an outdated technology, we'll just hold our phone up to the console, and get charged that way.

I would want to still believe that M$ is trying to put out feelers this early in the development and see if they can pull it off in regards to used games. I think final production will not have the function in use, but may have firmware update. Public opinion will think it is a very absurd idea, then again M$ might take a page out of $ony and piss off loyal fans.

if they stop me having a choice for preowned I will not buy it. pray PS4 stays away from that type of crap.

The only way I can see that being successful is to release games priced to sell. Make all games digital download and no more than $20 a piece then rely on you internet marketing and customer recommendations to sell the games. That way they can pass the marketing savings on to the customer.
I'll download games on the xbox for $20 but to force me to buy new games at a $60 price point with no other options for saving money is definitely a smack in the face for loyal customers.

Sadly most games are only on consoles and thus what you are buying is a over sized paperweight.

That, or don't play games. I don't really game much anyway, and I won't have any trouble finding something else to do; I was speaking more to the fact at how out of control these companies have gotten with DRM.
If they haven't found a way to screw their customers with one type of DRM or another, you can bet they're working on it.

money hungry companys, thats all they care about...

dont buy a used game, because they want EVERY PERSON to buy a brand new game! microsoft ( skynet ) thinks everyone is rich to shell out $60.00 a pop for these games. i dont care if the game developers spend 4 days with no sleep creating these games, thats no reason for us to pay out our asses.

so.. i go out and buy a game, play it for a week beat it, and now im done with it.. so i cant sell the game to someone who wants it!!?
microsoft... F. U. I will not buy one i can GARUNTEE ya that. i will keep to the ps3 or ps4. shit like that will be a huge downfall.
thank god for lan partys!!

"You screw me over, I screw you over twice as hard."

and ya wonder why people pirate games.....

Digital download would make more sence if they want to stop you buying used games but they will feel the wrath of gamestop and EBgames because they will not sell there consoles anymore and file a lawsuit to stop this, cant wait to see the outcome,

Maybe the Xbox will be called Rango.

From the movie.

Durango is the maker of a glass at the pub and you see that and he shortens it to Rango.

Alas the used games market will end up gone at some point, currently that is the only way the game stores survive otherwise they will go bankrupt.

There's only 2 game store companies that have kept the PC games around Game have gotten rid of the whole lot so I don't buy anything from Game ever I'll only take a look around nothing more.

I could see these companies dropping the console market in favour of the PC market some of the Game Devs have started to drop the console market and go the PC only route, PC is the place where you make money console just rip you off as a game dev.

Going Digital only isn't the best either as your paying for stuff that you don't really ever own the prices should be extremely cheap I've never paid for anything over $10 on steam and I've never bothered with the whole pre-game buy up either.

I wonder how the touch screen would work on this new console... I will not buy this console due to the fact that I barely play on the xbox consoles and I play on the PS3 more.

1218.2.2012 23:35

How about instead of forcing people to buy new games at massive prices they cut the prices. History has shown over and over again that if the price is reasonable not many will pirate or buy used. Even then people should have a right to sell a game they purchased and no longer want. I already think $60.00 is a lot for a video game, no matter how good it is or how long it took them to make it. I doubt that MS will put in that anti-used game system, just reading around the web should let MS know don't go there.

Still not seeing the point for a new XBox since the existing one plays ALL current games. What a waste!

PC gaming is the standard setter and there aren't any new games that can't be played on an XBox 360 or PS3
