A file with a .amr extension is a digital recording based on Adaptive Multi-rate Compression. The standard was adopted by 3GPP for use over mobile networks, carrying speech data. The bitrates are far too low to provide any decent quality for audio recordings, but the codec is commonly used with mobile phones to make voice recordings.
