Artifact

When speaking about video technology, an artifact is a visible unnatural effect not present in original video before being processed or altered somehow. These are often caused by digital compression, analog noise, analog crosstalk or after converting film to video. Blocking and Video Noise is commonly seen with MPEG video, used for DVD-Video.
