Joliet

Joliet is the Microsoft endorsed ISO 9660 CD-ROM standard extension. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) created this standard so it could share data between multiple operating systems. The ISO standard was primarily developed for use with CD-ROM media, but can be used on DVD format disks as well. Although, current standards usually call for UDF standardization on DVD media.

Under ISO 9660, Joliet is a file system thats main purpose is to relax stringent rules for file name character lengths. A Joliet formatted disk will write headers containing up to 64 bits of Unicode for file name preservation.
