mux_rate

In MPEG encoding the combined Bitrate of all streams is referred to as the mux_rate. Standalone player formats like DVD, VCD, and SVCD have maximum allowed mux_rates, the most famous of which is DVD's 10.08Mbps.

Sometimes the maximum mux_rate for a particular format is also determined by a standalone player's maximum read speed. For example, many DVD players can't read a CD any faster than 4x, which results in a maximum mux_rate of around 4.8Mbps for files on CD, even though the same files on a DVD could have a mux_rate of more than twice that.
